“Come near to God and He will come near to you.” — James 4:8

There have been mornings when I have sat down with every intention of spending time with God, only to notice the laundry that needed to be moved, the message I had forgotten to answer, or the list of things waiting for me that day. I pick up my phone to check one notification and, before I realize it, several minutes have passed. My Bible may still be open in front of me, but my attention is everywhere else. Most of us do not intentionally decide to create distance between ourselves and God. We do not wake up one morning and determine that we no longer need His presence. Distance often develops much more quietly.

Responsibilities pile up. Our calendars become crowded. The needs of our families, workplaces, churches, and communities compete for our attention. Sometimes disappointment settles into our hearts after a prayer seems unanswered. Other times, we become so accustomed to solving problems on our own that we slowly stop bringing them to God. We still believe. We still love Him. We may still attend church, serve others, and encourage the people around us. Yet somewhere along the way, our conversations with God become shorter, our time in His Word becomes less consistent, and the constant noise around us begins to drown out His voice. Distraction can create distance without us even realizing it.

The wider context of James 4 speaks about divided desires. James was writing to believers whose hearts were being pulled in different directions. They wanted closeness with God, but they were also pursuing things that could never fully satisfy them. Our distractions may look different today, but the struggle is still familiar. We can become divided between trusting God and trying to control every outcome. We can say that He is our source, even as we depend entirely on our own strength. We can long for peace while filling every quiet space with noise. We can desire His direction while staying too busy to listen.

Sometimes what feels like God’s distance is really the result of our divided attention. This does not mean every spiritually dry season is caused by something we have done wrong. There are times when God may feel quiet, even while we are faithfully seeking Him. But there are also moments when we need to pause and honestly ask what has been receiving the attention, dependence, and affection that once drew us closer to Him. James 4:8 offers both an invitation and a promise: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” Notice that God does not say we must first organize our lives perfectly, restore every spiritual habit, or find the right words. He simply invites us to come near.

God is not waiting for us to find the perfect words. He is simply inviting us to come near. We can come to Him distracted. We can come disappointed. We can come after relying on ourselves for far too long. We can even come unsure of how to begin. Sometimes reconnecting starts with an honest prayer: “God, I feel far from You, and I do not want to stay here.”That simple admission can become the first step back.

Reconnection does not always begin with an hour of uninterrupted prayer or a carefully planned routine. It may begin by placing the phone in another room for ten minutes. It may mean opening Scripture before opening social media. It may look like turning off the noise during the drive home and talking honestly with God about what has been weighing on our hearts. For some of us, drawing near may require surrendering the disappointment we have been afraid to acknowledge. We may need to admit that we pulled away because God did not answer a prayer the way we hoped. For others, it may mean confessing that we have been functioning in our own strength and only turning to God when we have exhausted every other option.

The step may feel small, but it redirects our attention toward the One who has never stopped loving us. Feeling disconnected from God does not mean He has disconnected Himself from us. Sometimes reconnecting begins with one honest step back toward Him. God is not hiding from us or holding our distraction over our heads. His invitation remains open. He welcomes us back into conversation, back into His Word, and back into the security of depending on Him. We may have allowed distraction to create distance, but God has not withdrawn His presence. As we turn our attention toward Him again, we discover that He has been lovingly inviting us closer all along.

Let's pray ...

Father,
Show me what has been distracting my heart and drawing my attention away from You. Help me take one honest step toward You today and rest in the promise that You will meet me there.
Amen.
