We’ve come a long way in how we engineer intelligent solutions to simplify our lives, designing convenience, efficiency, comfort, and functionality into our everyday tasks. And yet, of all the burdens and inconveniences life lays upon us, none are heavier than fear,  guilt, bad habits, injustice, past hurts, regrets, resentment, unforgiveness, humiliation, or conflicts that we try to encumber ourselves with, doggedly insisting we’ll carry on no matter what.

We haven’t given ourselves much room for grace, not much space for self-compassion.

We’re not nearly as kind to ourselves as we are to others, refusing to lay down the weight we’ve been carrying all these years. We willingly bear life’s burdens even when our knees are buckling under them, driving us to the brink of sanity. Carrying these burdens for so long can slowly wear down our emotional reserves, not to mention the toll they take on the body, with all sorts of ailments cropping up as our stress meter flares.

If you‘ve been carrying burdens that you want to conquer once and for all, to finally breathe that gift of freedom God has promised, here is a list of prayers and Bible verses to help you finally unload, to loosen your hold on things that God has freed you from, laying everything down at His feet, allowing Him to carry what you can no longer handle on your own.

3 Prayers to Help You Have the Grace to Let Go of What You Can No Longer Carry

1. Prayer for Detaching from the Past
Father,
Help me find closure in what has been… to make room for this new phase of life you’ve mapped out for me. Help me embrace this new path, knowing that there’s joy to be had, a new beginning, a fresh start that only you can give. May I be brave enough to move on and leave the past behind, carrying with me not its burdens but the beautiful memories and the lessons I’ve learned into the new life ahead. May the painful memory of the past be replaced with your joy and peace, renewing me and allowing me to embrace the unfamiliar with an open heart. Be with me, oh Lord, through every season of this journey, for I have no one but You. Keep me in the palm of your Hand as I go through this new season of life, keeping me close to you, surrounding me with your tender mercy, grace, and love.
Amen.

  • “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” -Philippians 3:13-14
  • “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing something new! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” - Isaiah 43:18-19
  • “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” - 2 Corinthians 5:17

2. Prayer for Releasing Past Hurts
Our Father,
The past has left me carrying so much hurt that I fail to see the beauty and joy before me. Help me let go of the past hurts, O God, and the disappointment that left me scarred all these years. Help me make peace with what has been, and look forward to all the good things ahead. Give me a heart that not only forgives but also blesses those who caused me unimaginable pain. Heal and tend to my wounds, O Lord, mend the broken places in me, and release the weight they’ve left behind. For I myself have been forgiven and must extend the same forgiveness to those who hurt me.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

  • “For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”  - Matt. 6:14
  • “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." - Ps. 147:3
  • “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” -John 8:36

3. Prayer for Overcoming  Fear
Father,
You are a Mighty God whose power knows no bounds. Why do I allow myself to be gripped in fear when You’re the One carrying me? Forgive me for my lack of faith, O Lord; deepen my trust in You, nurture it, and help my faith in You grow, knowing that You are a faithful God who keeps Your promises even when I trip up, stumbling over my sins. Help me break free from the grip of fear that haunts me, knowing that I have You, whose perfect love for me is more than able to cast out all my fears.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

  • “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” - 2 Timothy 1:7
  • “The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.” - Proverbs 29:25
  •  “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,     I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” - Isaiah 41:10

We are so predisposed to taking control of our lives that letting go of what we can no longer carry is such a herculean task for most of us. God freed us from these burdens a long time ago; all we have to do is stay rooted in His Word and remain in His presence, for it’s written…

“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” -  Isaiah 26:3 NKJV.
