“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:19

Sorting out our family calendar feels like playing a losing game of Tetris. I am constantly strategizing on how to meet the needs and obligations of all eight people who live under our roof. At this point, we often need to rope friends and family into this game; elaborate exchanges of kids from one friend to another family member are necessary to make it all work. It definitely takes a village, especially with a big family.

Maybe you can relate? You are spending your time studying your calendar, stressing over how to make it all work. It’s not easy to manage work, appointments, school commitments, social outings, sports obligations, and more! I often joke that we have gotten to the point at home where I really need to hire an assistant. The family unit has outgrown my solo leadership! Unfortunately, we don’t have the budget for a mom-assistant.  What does help when the task list starts piling up and the calendar for the week inspires an anxiety attack is reminding myself that everything I do is for the Lord and not for men. When I serve my family, I am first serving the Lord. God requires diligence, not perfection. He invites us to create restful rhythms for our lives. He does not want us to remain stressed out by chaotic action.

God also promises to meet our needs. When I don’t know who will watch my kids while I attend an appointment or who will drive my son to soccer practice, rather than panic, I am invited to trust in the Lord’s gracious provision. God cares about the small details! He is with us and values the important work we do in our homes.

I am not alone as the house manager; I may not be able to hire a personal assistant, but God tells us that His Spirit acts as our Helper. When my schedule gets too crowded, I can ask God’s guiding Spirit to show me the way through. He can help me to discern which things I need to do and which things may be too much for the week ahead. The Spirit can inspire creative solutions that ensure the small details of the schedule don’t get overlooked. He can give me peace when I am tempted to spiral over what I cannot get done in time.

Reflecting on God’s ordinary everyday provision helps as we seek to trust God with all the details are are in charge of. Ordinary life where our most extraordinary God shows up. Take a few moments to reflect, and you will see that God is still at work amid the details that make up our days. Maybe he is there in that perfectly brewed cup of coffee that your body desperately needs to stay energized through this crazy day. He could be in the sweet hugs and kisses your kids dole out before heading out to school. It could be an encouraging conversation you have with a coworker in the midst of a tough workday or a friend who offers to drive your kid home from practice today, saving you one extra trip out.

God’s gracious provision is always present. Don’t forget to notice it and give thanks for how God’s providence holds our plans together. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Trust God to establish your steps as you do the important work of managing your family's crazy, hectic calendar.

Let’s pray ...

Father,
I thank you that I may be the one who makes the plans in my home, but you are the one who establishes my steps. When I feel stressed out as I try to care for every detail for my family, remind me that your Spirit is with me. You are a God of peace, not chaos. Help me discern what I need to do and what is just too much. Inspire creative solutions when problems arise. Gracefully provide for every need we have.
Amen.
