If you’re frustrated by your perceived lack of personal growth, failing to grow into the version of yourself you relentlessly chase, let Paul’s frustrations in Romans 7:15 hearten you to offer yourself a little more grace and put your faith in God’s perfect timing for your most awaited season of growth.

“For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.”  Rom. 7:15 NKJV.

Paul once faltered, struggling to become the ideal person he envisioned.   And yet we know that in God’s own time, he flourished in faith and grew in holiness as he pursued the Lord with fierce resolve. His transformation didn’t come about with a snap of the fingers. Neither will yours be. It took countless mistakes and a long road of resilience before he became the formidable Paul we know today.

As the elders often say, “some stories just need a few more chapters,” a much-needed detour before that long-held transformation takes root. You may not be one of those people who bloom in season; you may even stagnate for a time. Yes, every believer grows at his/her own pace; different paths, different setbacks, but we, nonetheless, end up finding our way home to the same place. It’s the very reason that He allows us to pass through the hard season, even bearing the weight of grief, because a noble character can only be forged through fire. That said, I’m reminded of this line: “Anything that is worth becoming requires the courage to endure the waiting.” Nature itself proves it to be so, as in the long, agonizing metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly, the painfully slow growth of a Mahogany tree, and many other similar examples of prolonged seasons of waiting observed in nature.

“But we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance;   and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” Rom. 5:3-6 NKJV.

Your aspiration to see, act, speak, and live according to your deepest values and convictions may take a few seasons, but it will come around in God’s own time. Ours is a life made of long seasons of waiting. None of God’s faithful servants has ever lived a life of convenience. It’s a life of perseverance, testing, courage, and difficult seasons. But don’t let that frustration, that season of waiting, rob you of His peace. As Christians, this is where irony comes into play. We may live through bouts of frustration and inconvenience now and then, but we’re also promised to experience His joy and peace.

And if you’re struggling to break free from the cycle of repeated mistakes that prevent you from growing into the life and person you’ve always aspired to be— give yourself some grace. Remember, even when God obliges us to work towards perfection, to measure up to His standard: “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”  Matt. 5:48 NKJV,  He’s also gracious enough to include some leeway to soften the impact of such demand. As it’s written:  “As a father pities His children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.” Ps. 103:13-15 NKJV

We’re dust, flawed and imperfect, as we’re still not in our glorified body, and therefore, susceptible to wandering off course from time to time. God understands that we can’t reach perfection, not yet, but He expects us to strive for it. And if we couldn’t help but feel frustrated, restless for not living up to God’s standard, so be it. It only means that the Spirit of the Lord dwells in us, keeping us restless until God’s truth is fully lived out and becomes a part of how we live. Just as there’s growth in struggles, there's also growth in frustration. And whenever we feel defeated, let’s wield the power of His Word to rise above personal strongholds. His Word is a force to beckon with—that the Lord Himself declared: “Is not My Word like a fire?”  “And like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Jer. 23:29

You see, we don’t fight the way the world does because “the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they (God’s Words) have divine power to demolish strongholds.” –(2 Cor. 10:3-4 NIV) There is this supernatural power at work within us, a Presence, the Holy Spirit, who strengthens us to wipe away strongholds once we embody God’s Truth. So let’s His life-giving Words reveal the lies and deceits of the wicked one, to wield the power of His Word in breathing life into our purpose and dreams, and to speak victory over our weaknesses that we may be transformed into vessels through which God’s goodness flows into every person we come across with, releasing His goodness where it is most needed.

Let us pray…

Holy God,
Who, alone, deserves all praise and honor, we seek your guidance, asking for your wisdom as we strive to become the people you envision us to be. Give us the patience to endure what may be slow yet perfect shaping of our character, to trust and stay open to how you form and refine our inner life. May we always be mindful of the power your Word holds, empowered to live your truth, breaking free from the defeatist mindset that holds us back from living the full life You’ve promised. May we be one with You in Spirit; may your heart’s desires be our hearts’ deepest passions that we may fulfill your dreams and aspirations for all of us.
This we pray in Jesus ' name,
Amen.
