Trusting the Timing of Your Life When Circumstances Suddenly Change - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - August 8, 2026
“But I trust in you, LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’ My times are in your hands; deliver me from the hands of my enemies, from those who pursue me.” — Psalm 31:14-15 NIV
There are moments when life changes before our hearts have time to catch up. A phone call comes. An email arrives. A diagnosis is mentioned. A relationship shifts. A door we thought was opening suddenly closes, or a responsibility we did not expect is placed in our hands. One moment we are moving forward with a plan, and the next we are trying to steady ourselves in a place we did not choose. I have lived through seasons where the timing of my life felt confusing. Some changes were painful. Some were unexpected delays. Some were opportunities I prayed for but still felt unprepared to walk through. I have learned that even good changes can feel unsettling when they arrive suddenly. We can trust God and still feel shaken. We can believe He is faithful and still whisper, “Lord, I did not see this coming.”
Psalm 31 gives us words for moments like these. David does not pretend his circumstances are easy. He is surrounded by pressure, opposition, and uncertainty. Yet in the middle of it, he makes a declaration: “But I trust in you, LORD.” That word “but” matters. It shows us that trust is not always the result of calm circumstances. Sometimes trust is the choice we make while life still feels unresolved. David does not say, “My times are in my hands.” He says, “My times are in your hands.” His confidence is not in his ability to control the outcome, understand the delay, or manage every detail. His confidence is in the character of God.
When circumstances suddenly change, we often want immediate clarity. We want to know why this happened, what it means, and how everything will work out. But Scripture gently reminds us that our lives are not held together by our ability to predict the future. They are held by the God who is already present in it. This does not mean change will not hurt. It does not mean waiting will feel easy. It does not mean disappointment is a lack of faith. It means we are invited to bring our honest emotions to the Lord while also remembering what is true: He is God. He is near. He is not careless with our lives. Our times are in His hands.
If something in your life has shifted suddenly, take a moment to name it before God. You do not have to clean up your emotions before you come to Him. Tell him what feels uncertain. Tell Him what you are afraid of losing. Tell him what you hoped would happen. Then, as an act of faith, place that circumstance back into His hands. You may even pray David’s words slowly: “But I trust in you, LORD.” Not because you have all the answers, but because you know the One who holds them. “You are my God.” Not just when life feels steady, but when it feels interrupted. “My times are in your hands.” Not in the hands of fear, delay, disappointment, another person’s decision, or a sudden change.
Today, consider one small response of trust. Maybe it is choosing prayer before panic. Maybe it is resisting the need to rush ahead. Maybe it is asking God for wisdom for the next step instead of demanding the whole map. Maybe it is worshiping Him in the middle of uncertainty because His goodness has not changed.
Sudden change may alter your plans, but it does not remove you from God’s care. The timing of your life is not random. It is held by the faithful hands of your Father.

Dear Father,
When circumstances change suddenly, my heart can feel unsettled. I confess that I often want answers, clarity, and control. But Your Word reminds me that my times are in Your hands. Help me trust You when life does not unfold the way I expected. Remind me that You are near, faithful, and not surprised by what I am facing. Give me wisdom for the next step and patience when that is all You reveal. I choose to say with David, “You are my God.” Hold my heart steady in Your faithful hands.
