When God Opens a Door He Makes a Way - iBelieve Truth: A Devotional for Women - September 3, 2025
“To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” Revelation 3:7
After months of preparation, I felt I was ready for my big interview. I had reviewed my answers on my application, created flashcards, and ensured that my responses to the application questions came quickly and efficiently to mind. But the night before, as I practiced with my husband, things got a little fuzzy.
I'd been through a long day of work, and I was tired. I began to draw a blank on specific questions that I had known so well just a couple of days before. At the realization that I might not pass my interview, I began to get teary-eyed.
“I don't think I can do this,” I said to my husband. He assured me that I was fine, that I knew the material well, and not to get flustered. He was confident that I knew the answers to the questions and that I would do well.
Additionally, I didn't sleep well that night. My mind raced with all the worst-case scenarios regarding the interview. What if I didn't remember any of the answers? What if I completely blanked? What would I do?
On the way to the office, my husband and I prayed. We prayed for clarity, for boldness, and for my brain to recall what I had remembered. We asked God to honor my hard work and the preparation I had done for months.
When I walked into the room, I sat down, took a deep breath, and waited. As I did the night before, I grew in confidence with each correct answer. The Holy Spirit helped me recall the answers I had prepared for many months. At the end of the interview, they told me they would offer accreditation to me. Accreditation within our denomination means you are eligible to become a licensed official worker. This is something I'd had in my heart for a long time, and now it had become a reality.
Despite my doubts, fear, and inability to think clearly, the Holy Spirit showed up. He was clear that God had opened that door for me and helped me walk through it. He helped calm my fears, recalled memory answers, and helped me answer questions with confidence.
The above verse reminds us that God is in control of every situation. Just when we think we know the outcome, God knows better. He reminds us that even when we are weak, God is strong. Even when we feel the situation is impossible, God can open a door that no one can shut. And he can also shut doors that no one can open. This verse is of great encouragement to me whenever I face a situation that seems impossible for God to conquer.
In my strength, I know it is impossible. But as I pray, I ask God to honor me and honor my request if it's according to his will. Although I don't receive everything I ask for, God has been good in granting many of my requests.
Are you facing a situation that seems impossible to you? What do you do when that happens? Do you cower in fear, assuming the worst-case scenario? Do you go to God, asking him for boldness and clarity, and help him to open doors that no man can shut?
God is the God of the impossible. Paul, in prison, believed he would never get out. But in one miraculous moment, everything changed. The prison door that kept him flew open. It was Paul's confirmation from the Lord that he saw him and knew what he was going through. Even under intense persecution, he was able to open the pathway to pulse freedom. We serve a God who can perform miracles on our behalf. We just need to be ready and watch to see what he will do.
Father, help us become people who believe in your miraculous ways. Let us pray to you in impossible situations, knowing that in your sovereignty, you can open doors that no one can shut and shut doors that no one can open. Amen.
