Nine Powerful Names of God
By Michael A. Youssef, Ph.D.
Read Psalm 148:13-14.
If you truly want a deep, abiding relationship with God, then you must know, praise, speak, and invoke His powerful names. Here are just nine with which you can worship the Lord.
First, there is Yahweh, which means “the God who is always there.” This name for God is used more than any other in Scripture—6,800 times. Yahweh is “the ever-living God” or “the self-existing God.” He does not need anything outside of Himself.
Next is Yahweh-Jireh, “the Lord provides.” Abraham proclaimed this name after the Lord provided a sacrificial ram in place of his son Isaac. Jireh literally means “the one who sees ahead.”
Then, there is Yahweh-Rapha, “the Lord our healer.” His name is synonymous with wholeness and renewal. He is the balm for our wounds. He mends broken hearts.
Yahweh-Nissi means “the Lord is my banner.” In other words, He is the source of our sure victory. Like a banner over an army, He leads His people in triumph over their enemies.
Yahweh-Mekaddish uses the Hebrew word that means “to be set apart.” It means God is holy. God set Himself apart for us, and when you understand the depths of His love displayed on the cross, you’ll want to be totally set apart for Him.
God is also our peace, Yahweh-Shalom. God gives us the only true, lasting peace there is—even in the midst of chaos. He provides peace that surpasses understanding.
Next, we can call God Yahweh-Rohi, “the Lord is my shepherd,” because he cares for His people. His companionship is eternal, and He banishes all our fears.
God is also Yahweh-Tsidkenu, “the Lord our righteousness.” There is nothing we can do to make ourselves righteous before God. Only Christ’s righteousness given to us through faith in His atoning blood can bring us into the family of God.
Finally, there is Yahweh-Shammah, “the God who hears me.” He is there for you every moment of every day. In fact, Zephaniah 3:17 tells us He rejoices over us with singing. He is delighted when you come and fellowship with Him.
The more I praise God, the more I see His power and sovereignty at work in my life. Start praising Him with His special names every single day. It will transform your life.
Prayer: Yahweh, You are my righteousness, my banner, my peace. I praise Your holy name. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
“Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens” (Psalm 148:13).
