How to build a house that withstands the storms

 November 18, 2010

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."

 Matthew 7:24-27

There are some subjects that many Christians avoid talking about altogether, and I think the most common is one God's judgment. While Christians today are typically happy to praise God for his love and kindness, far fewer are quick to praise him for his justice.

But with God, these attributes are two sides of the same coin. Without God's justice, there would be no mercy at all! It's important, then, that both characteristics be appreciated.

In this passage in Matthew, Jesus compares the justice of God to a terrible storm. Those who listen to Jesus and build their house on the solid rock will survive the storm of God's judgment. But those who don't listen and build their house on sand will be swept away when the judgment comes.

Jesus here makes it abundantly clear that there are two kinds of people: those who listen to him and those who don't. And there's no amount of church you can attend or number of praise songs you can sing that will substitute for listening to the words of Jesus.

Jesus' message of salvation through faith in him is the foundation of having true life. So build your life founded firmly in Christ by trusting in his death and resurrection for the forgiveness of your sins.
