Micah 6:8

“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Walk humbly with your God!

The word ‘humbly’ used in Micah 6:8 is translated from the word ‘tsana’ and is only found twice in the Old Testament.

In Proverbs 11:2 – “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with the humble is wisdom.”

The word ‘tsana’ is defined as ‘to be lowly, submissive, modest’. There is nothing passive about this word, to be lowly, submissive, and modest requires action.

Walking humbly with the Lord requires action. It requires a daily commitment to swimming against the current of our society that seeks self-promotion, self-recognition, self-elevation, and to say: If it wasn’t for God’s grace and love I wouldn’t be who I am today.

If it wasn’t for God’s creativity who spoke the Earth into existence and breathed life into the human body I wouldn’t be who I am today.

If it wasn’t for God’s forgiveness that has washed my sin away and restored me to a righteousness I wouldn’t be who I am today.

Humility is just as active as the blood in our veins. It brings us to our knees, not in a condemning manner but in an identity-setting, gratitude-evoking, way that says, “I am who I am today because of Jesus’ death and resurrection and I owe all to him.”

Humility makes us decide that wherever God calls us we will be submissive and follow because he deserves our devoted obedience. And whoever my neighbors are, I will love them, and not look down at them with pride because their life is different than mine. I am who I am because of Jesus.
