Trust in the Spirit
John 14:25-26 (NIV®)
“All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
When Jesus told His disciples, “I’m leaving you, and you can’t come with Me,” they were understandably alarmed. But then He said, “Don’t be afraid. When I’m gone, the Father will send the Holy Spirit to you, and He will remind you of everything I’ve said.” If God had put me in charge of the Jesus Initiative, I would have had Jesus make a list of His twenty most significant teachings and sign it “Jesus of Nazareth.” But Jesus never wrote a word, and the New Testament was fueled, guided, and directed by the Spirit of God. The accuracy of the New Testament depends on this very notion: to the extent that I trust Jesus, I can trust the Spirit of God to have given me, with integrity, the lessons I need.
Heavenly Father, Your Word is a gift in my life. Thank You that it is trustworthy and that its message never changes. Thank You for sending the Holy Spirit to guide us in the truth of Your Word and Your ways. Holy Spirit, give me increased knowledge of the Word and awareness of how I should apply it to my life. May I always be known as a man of the Word. In Jesus’ name, amen.
