A Prayer for a Pastor’s Wife
By Victoria Riollano

Bible Reading
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

Sitting alone in the back row after leading worship, I let a single tear fall. I was overwhelmed. Though the church my husband and I planted was thriving, I was broken.

I had always heard the phrase, “The church is a hospital.” And that phrase rang true for the addicted, the abandoned, the rejected, and the disregarded. I had seen firsthand how my husband's weekly sermons brought a dose of hope to those in need. Yet, while many praise the pastor for delivering words that soothe the soul, there is often another person silently hurting in the pews: the pastor's wife.

Those in the congregation often overlook this important role. Many pastors' wives carry hidden wounds that few can relate to. From the self-imposed pressure to do everything possible to keep the ministry afloat, to church “friends” who come and go, to juggling multiple responsibilities with a smile, being a pastor's wife is not for the faint of heart.

For years, I carried these wounds. They brought me to tears, made me question my every action, and caused me to withdraw into myself. It took years of self-reflection, my husband's support, finding authentic community, and seeking the Lord daily to learn to navigate these challenges.

Sadly, I've learned that many pastors' wives face similar experiences. But how can we support someone who often spends so much of her time supporting others?

It starts with grace.

The truth is, even the most devoted pastor's wife needs grace. She is a real person, prone to making mistakes like anyone else in the church. She battles her own imperfections and frustrations while also helping others who may look to her for spiritual advice.

Romans 3:23 reminds us, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Solomon also wrote, “Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins” (Ecclesiastes 7:20).

In other words, she will not be perfect.

There may be times when she unintentionally hurts your feelings, whether by not saying hello or forgetting to respond to a text. Perhaps she didn't choose you for a special task in the church, or you felt she treated you unfairly. She may also be facing personal struggles involving her health, mistreatment, the loss of friendships, or financial difficulties that cause her to seem distant for a season.

Rather than making assumptions, remember that she may be balancing the needs and emotions of many people in the church while navigating her own challenges. The very moment that felt personal to you may have been an honest mistake.

I've seen firsthand how misunderstandings can lead people to leave a local ministry, causing pain and adding even more pressure on a pastor's wife to be as perfect as possible.

When in doubt, extend the same grace you would hope to receive. As Jesus teaches in Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

In addition to grace, my prayer is that you offer her support.

Instead of focusing solely on how the pastor's wife can serve your family, consider how you might show up for her. Could you offer to babysit? Would she appreciate help sending emails or organizing a church event?

Offering support isn't about putting her on a pedestal. It's about recognizing that she may carry significant emotional and practical responsibilities within the church.

I've found that many people recognize the weight carried by the senior pastor but may not realize how much ministry work, whether administrative tasks or caring for the spiritual needs of others, can also fall on his wife.

Even one church member offering a helping hand can make a tremendous difference. That support can encourage her to keep going when she feels weary, just as Galatians 6:9 reminds us not to give up in doing good.

Finally, pray for her.

Through prayer, we can ask God to give her wisdom, strength, and peace as she navigates the joys and challenges of ministry.

As we end this devotional today, let's pray for the women who serve alongside their husbands in pastoral ministry. We may never know the struggles hidden behind their Sunday morning smiles.

When we're willing to extend grace, offer support, and lift them up in prayer, we help carry one another's burdens, as Galatians 6:2 encourages us to do.

Let's Pray

Heavenly Father,

I pray for my pastor's wife. Though I may not fully understand what she goes through, I thank You for the ways she serves the church. Give me eyes to see where I can step in and help. Give me discernment to know how to pray for her.

Forgive me if I've made unfair assumptions about her or placed unrealistic expectations on her. Help me see her as Your daughter, not simply as someone whose role is to serve the church.

Show me how to honor and encourage her through grace, support, and prayer. Thank You for Your precious daughter and the work she does. Renew her strength, courage, and joy in the days to come.

In Jesus' name, amen.
