A Prayer for Safety and Peace When Night Comes
By: Amanda Idleman

Bible Reading:
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. - Psalm 91:4

Listen or Read Below:

Psalm 91 is a declaration by the poet that God is our refuge. Throughout the chapter, God is described as our shelter, a shadow we can rest in, our refuge and fortress, one we can trust, he will save us, and he will cover us under his wings.

He goes on to say that God is faithful, that because of his goodness, you don’t have to fear the terror of night or the trouble that comes at us in the day. With God, no harm will overtake you or destroy you. He has set angels around you to guard you. God loves you and therefore, he will protect you! When we call on him, he will answer. He will bless us and show us his gracious salvation

Wow, what an amazing declaration of how safe we are in God’s hands! These are the words that can become ours when we need to set our minds at ease. When we feel afraid and are seeking his safety. Call on those powerful wings to cover you and your home. Rest in the knowledge that you are sheltered by the Lord.

When I doubt God’s faithfulness, I remember my kids, especially my youngest three. Each of these precious little ones joined our family through foster care and adoption, and they have experienced loss and brokenness that is truly unimaginable, but God.

He saw them, even before they entered this chaotic world, and while he could not undo the sins of their parents, he could cover them under his wings so they would have a safe place to grow and heal. God has done countless miracles on their behalf, orchestrating every detail of their stories so they might find God’s grace. While this does not negate their loss, it shows his relentless willingness to reach into the darkness and do all he can to bring light into our lives.

He did this, not because they asked for healing, for miracles, or for a forever family, but because he knit them together and loves them. Even as our youngest baby girl sat alone, fighting for her life in the NICU because the world had abandoned her, God did a miracle for us. He brought her back to life and set his angel's charge over her. God never abandons his children.

He never lets our brokenness have the last word. He never lets the darkness win. If it’s true for these little ones, it’s true for you. He wants you to find peace in the refuge of his wings and trust that he is faithful to overcome the darkness of this world. You are safe; all you have to do is call on his name, and he promises to respond to our cries for help. You can rest well with God’s peace that surpasses all understanding.

Let’s Pray:

God, I thank You for protecting us. We are never alone. You always go before us, guiding our steps, and even when darkness comes into our stories, Your light is always greater. You are forever making beauty from the ashes of this world. Thank You for always being with me.

I declare that I can have peace tonight because you are my shield, my fortress, my shadow, and my refuge. I can rest easy at night because I know Your angels are set around me, offering me protection when I need it. Calm my thoughts and help me to meditate on the comforting picture of Your feathered wings covering my home tonight.

Let Your faithfulness be my shield. I ask for a long life in which You show me the glory of Your salvation. Help me to trust that You are my safe place. Let Your peace rest on me and my home. I thank You, Lord, for this. Amen.

As we begin a brand-new year, I want to help you slow down and listen for God’s invitation in your life. In this episode, we kick off our One Word 2026 series — a simple, prayerful way to reflect on where you’ve been and discern how God may be inviting you to grow in the year ahead.

I introduce the heart behind choosing a spiritual “one word,” not as a goal to achieve, but as a posture to receive. We explore two of the six words I’ll be offering this month — confidence and diligence — and look at how Scripture invites us to grow, not by relying on our own strength, but by trusting God’s faithfulness over time.
