A Prayer of Surrender

Bible Reading:
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” - Exodus 14:14

Read or Listen Below:

News reports, relationship struggles, unexpected bills, and doctor updates are just some of the things that flood into our day, and those situations bring with them a host of decisions and emotions that can overwhelm every part of our hearts and brains.

In our Western culture, it is very common to be presented with one of these mantras daily: “Stand up for yourself,” “Fight for the Truth,” and “Don’t let anyone walk all over you.” So it seems pretty natural when we are overwhelmed with challenging situations to want to take a stand on the issue, rush to fight for our rights, and ensure that no one takes advantage of us. That's what is expected in our culture; even our legal system depends on people wanting to do this.

When we are put into an impossibly difficult situation and feel overwhelmed and even angry, there are some realities that we must accept now. We must stand up for ourselves and ensure the truth is always revealed. We should never allow ourselves to be put into a position of being taken advantage of. However, the reality is that there are times when the situations we face are too overwhelming for us to fight, or there are absolutely no answers to the pain that lies before us in those dark times.

In these moments, we can consider the truth in Exodus 14:14: The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

We must be still. We must surrender the entire difficult situation and its unknown outcome and every detail of it to the Lord, the one who fights for you. We must surrender our fears and hopes as we throw in the white flag. We must refuse to fight it and just be still. We must give it to the Lord completely and be still. Be at peace. Know that no matter what the situation might be, the Lord is absolutely fighting for you, and when the Lord fights the battle, it will be complete. You must just stand aside and let Him do what He will do in the battle.

There is another verse found in 2 Chronicles 20:15 that says this: For the battle is not yours, but God. In each hard situation that you find yourself in, when you are surrounded on every side by pressing forces, you must look to the Lord and surrender the situation into His very capable hands. He allowed the battle to come to you. You must only direct your eyes on the Lord and lift your hands up in surrender to Him and cling to His promises. Psalm 46:10 says this: Be still and know that I am God.

This battle that you face. It is the Lord’s battle. You are to know in this that He is God. You are to be still. You are to let Him fight it for you all the way to the very end. He is good and He keeps His word.

Let’s Pray:

Lord, today I will cling to the promise this verse gives me. You are there. You will fight for me in all of the hard and impossible situations I am facing. I lift my hands up to you as I surrender all control of these to you. Where I want justice, I will trust you. Where I want answers, I will trust you. Where I want peace and hope, I will trust you. I will trust you in my relationships, finances, future, and health. I will still be waiting for you to determine how each of these situations will be resolved. I will be still in my heart and my thoughts as I cling to you and your promise. I will trust your word that you will fight for me. I will be still and watch you fight for me in every area of my life. Amen.
