A Prayer to Renew My Commitment to Jesus
By Keneesha Saunders-Liddie

Bible Reading:
“Create in me a clean heart, Oh Lord, and renew a right spirit within me.” - Psalms 51:10

Have you ever been driving and not really focusing on where you are going or the way you are operating the vehicle? Your mind is going miles per hour, but you are on autopilot. I believe many believers are living their lives like that. We can be going through the motions and not truly living in the moment. Many times, we are on autopilot while serving God and not truly committed to Him.

Every Sunday, we go to church, we pray, we worship, but our hearts are not connected with our Heavenly Father. Sometimes, when we take time to focus and examine ourselves, we’ve been on autopilot for so long. The time will come, like right now, that we need to renew our commitment to Jesus. Other times, sin has taken over residence in our lives for so long that the still small voice of the Holy Spirit is barely audible.

God has never left our side, and the Holy Spirit still resides within, but we are out of fellowship. The sweet communion has been broken, and we know that redeeming the time is crucial. This is the time to renew our commitment to Jesus. It is time to examine our hearts, to bridge the gap, and restore the fellowship with our Savior.

There are many instances in the Bible of people and nations that needed to renew their commitment to God. Our Bible verse for today was written by King David, who broke his fellowship with God when he sinned with Bathsheba. David was in the wrong place at the right time. As King and commander in chief, he should have been on the battlefield, but a window of idleness led him to sin. He eventually had her husband killed and lost his first child with Bathsheba because of his sin. However, when he was confronted with his wicked ways, he wrote Psalms 51 and repented of his sin.

The prophet Nathan caused him to realize that he had sinned against God. David then asked God to give him a clean heart and restore a right spirit in him. This is why David is known as a man after God’s own heart because he would repent and forsake sin once he examined himself and acknowledged his wrongdoing. The same should be said of us if we would examine our hearts and motives. Now is not the time to be playing church and giving God half-hearted service.

The signs of the times are everywhere. Jesus is coming soon. Our salvation is truly nearer than when we first believed. It is time to wake up from slumber, to pray fervently and without ceasing, to get out of autopilot mode and renew our commitment to Jesus. Let’s stop being lukewarm and not go through the motions. Let us study to show ourselves approved, let us live considering eternity as though this is our last day on earth.

If sin is holding you back from God, repent. God says if we draw near to him, he will draw near to us. If you’ve been going through the motions and serving God on autopilot, now is the time to pray and renew your commitment and fellowship with God. Let us say, like David, when we come to understand that we are no longer in sweet fellowship with God, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.

Let’s Pray:

Most gracious Father and Lord, what an awesome, merciful, and loving God you are. Please, examine my heart and my motives and cause me to realize any errors in my commitment. I have distanced myself from you, whether it is through sin or losing the passion in things I’ve done over and over. Give me a renewed joy for your word and your local church. If there is sin in my life that hinders my prayer, forgive me. I repent of my mediocrity and lukewarm attitude and want to be on fire for you again, Oh Lord. Restore the fire I had when I first trusted you as Lord. I want to renew my commitment to you. Help me to pray without ceasing, to read and study your word, and to put you first in all that I do. Don’t cast me away from your presence and allow the sweet fellowship I had with the Comforter to rekindle. Father, create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. May the Holy Spirit lead me into your truth as I renew my zeal and commitment with you. In Jesus’ name, amen.
