A Prayer to Walk by Faith in the New Year

“For we live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).

As the New Year approaches, I'm reminded of my doubts and insecurities. I fear that the upcoming year will be filled with troubles and devoid of hope. I’m challenging myself to change my perspective on life. Rather than thinking in a negative way this upcoming year, I’m choosing to boldly step out in faith.

I want to “live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7). The words Paul says here still apply to us in the modern day: we need to focus on our future in Heaven with Jesus rather than our present struggles. Living by faith and not by sight challenges us to look to the spiritual instead of the physical.

If we live by sight, we will constantly be doubting God because we will never physically see Him. We will only see the evil that is so prevalent around us. This is why we must walk by faith, as faith is being sure of what is unseen (Hebrews 11:1). We will not see God in our physical lives, yet He is all around us. In this upcoming year, He will be with us every step of the way. Never doubt His presence in your life.  

We can walk by faith by stepping out in bravery, obeying God, and trusting Him, even when we are overcome with doubt. Faith can be a tricky discipline to cultivate, yet it is one we must learn as believers. The more we trust in God, the greater our faith will become.

Hold on to the promises of God, even if you don’t see them being fulfilled yet. There will come a day when all God’s promises will be revealed in your life. On this day, you will see light truly claim victory over the darkness in your life. 

Live your life to the fullest because you know God is your safety net. He will guide you as you walk through this new year and ensure your feet are kept on steady ground. God is good, and He has wonderful plans for you this upcoming year (Jeremiah 29:11). 

God may open the door for you to start a new career, meet a new friend, or learn a new skill this year. We never need to doubt what God can do in our lives. Ephesians 3:20-21 says, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

For this reason, keep pushing forward. God is for you and never against you (Romans 8:31). God will be with you as you face this upcoming year. Do not be afraid or worry about what could happen. Instead, choose to step out in faith and trust that the Lord will be your parachute. 

Let's Pray:

Dear God, help me to walk by faith and not by sight. I fear I have discredited you far too many times in walking by sight rather than walking by faith. I tend to focus only on what I can see, and this does a great disservice to you. Please forgive me and help me to always look to you this upcoming year and in every year to come.

Focusing too much on what I can see will cause me to fear, so help me look to you, God. You are my good, good Father, and I know you will watch over me this upcoming year. Help it to be a wonderful year and a year in which I grow more in the image of your Son.

I give you all the praise, God. Amen.
