Your Nightly Prayer

An Undivided Heart for Busy Days

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.

Psalm 86:11

SOMETHING TO PONDER

This night's prayer asks God to gather your scattered attention back to Him.

You finally make it to your bed. The day is over, and it is time to rest. But your brain and body haven’t got the memo. Your mind is still racing, going over all the details of the days ahead. Scanning to find out if you missed anything. Considering how everyone you love will get what they need. Your body is tense; it cannot relax while your mind is wandering, and the sleep you need is hard to reach.

This is a scene that often plays out in our lives: our attention is scattered, and our brains are going a hundred miles an hour, trying to keep up with everything going on around us. Jesus invites us to live differently. To let go of our heavy burdens and live restfully.

Matthew 11:28-30 Jesus preaches, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Rest, focus, and an undivided heart begin at the feet of Jesus. We have to come to him, releasing our scattered thoughts, and pick up his easy yoke. He’s got this. He knows what we need. His call for us is not to worry things into existence but to trust his provision for each day.

Remember, our purpose is not rooted in productivity. We were made for worship. To have daily communion with the one true God. So even when our plans fail, we can pause to praise, knowing that God deserves our love and focus every single day.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Father, I thank you for offering me rest. That in your presence, I can let go of my racing thoughts and trust you for all that I need. Help me to remember that I was not made for productivity; I am made for worship. Even when the to-do list is long, I am here to praise you. Calm my mind and body; help me to trust you for all that I need. Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. What does daily worship look like in your life?

  2. How can you begin to let go of your addiction to productivity and embrace God’s rest?

  3. Give God thanks for his provision in your life.
