TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

“Take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” - Psalm 37:4

SOMETHING TO PONDER

Have you ever noticed that sometimes the hardest seasons aren’t the painful ones necessarily—but they’re the numb ones? The numb-mundane-just-going-through-the-motions type of seasons.

There are seasons when your faith feels hopeful and alive. You open your Bible with anticipation, excited for the day. Prayers feel natural. Worship tugs at your heart in a deep way, and God’s presence feels ever closer. And then there are seasons when life becomes busy, exhausting, or disappointing. You still believe, and you still trust God. But if you’re honest, the joy feels muted, and you feel a little numb.

For many years, I prayed through infertility, losses, doctor’s appointments, waiting rooms, and heartbreak. I learned how to cling to God in desperation and lots of prayer. Then God answered in a way that changed everything, blessing me with my daughter. Now my days may look different as I’m walking in answered prayers. They’re filled with diapers, nap schedules, bottles, laundry, and caring for the little girl I prayed so long to hold. The waiting season has now become my motherhood season. Yet sometimes even answered prayers can put you in a season where you still feel numb and are just getting by, going through the motions of everyday life.

Maybe you’re also walking in a season of answered prayers, but still feel a little numb and joyless. There is no guilt in admitting this. It doesn’t mean you are ungrateful. It doesn’t mean you love God less. It simply means you are human. But the key to delighting Him is remembering who He was in past seasons. Think about the prayers God has already answered in your life. Think about the doors He opened, the healing He brought, the provision He provided, and the ways He carried you when you didn’t know how to move forward. The same God who was faithful then is present now. Sometimes delight begins by remembering the past.

The beautiful truth is that God is not disappointed when you come to Him feeling weary. He doesn’t ask you to manufacture joy or pretend everything is fine. Instead, He invites you back into His presence, where true delight is found. Psalm 37:4 reminds us that delighting in God isn’t about forcing emotions. It’s about turning our attention back toward the One who never changes. As we draw near to Him, He gently rekindles what has grown dim. Don’t stop remembering past seasons just because you might be experiencing a numb season now.

Tonight, pause and remember. The God who carried you through years of hard seasons in the past is the same God who is carrying you through whatever numb season you are in right now, too. The God who met you in your tears in the past is still present in your answered prayers. Ask Him to awaken your heart again—not just for what He has given you, but for who He is.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear God,
Tonight I come before You exactly as I am. If I’m honest, there have been moments lately when my heart has felt tired. Life has been full, responsibilities have been many, and sometimes my joy has felt distant. I still love You, Lord, but I miss the delight that once came so naturally. Would you awaken my heart again? Restore my excitement. Help me remember who You are and to find joy in You again.  Help me never lose sight of all you have done in the past, and please remind me within my ordinary days. When days feel repetitive, remind me that these are the very moments I once begged You for. When life feels rushed, help me slow down long enough to see Your goodness. When my heart feels distracted, draw my eyes back to You.
Thank You for every prayer You’ve answered and every prayer You’re still writing the story of. Thank You for carrying me through seasons I never thought I’d survive. Thank You for loving me when my faith feels strong and when it feels weak. Awaken fresh gratitude in me— and remind me of Your presence that has sustained me through every season.
As I close my eyes tonight, help my heart rest in Your presence. Let tomorrow be marked by a renewed awareness of Your goodness, Your kindness, and Your love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. When was the last time I felt genuine delight in God’s presence, and what helped me draw close to Him during that season?
  2. Have I become so focused on God’s gifts that I’ve lost sight of the Giver?
  3. What answered prayers or blessings in my life have I stopped noticing or thanking God for?

Reflect on tonight’s prayer and share how God met you there. Join the Your Nightly Prayer discussion on the Crosswalk Forum.
