Ending September with Steady Hope
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD, the LORD himself, is the Rock eternal” (Isaiah 26:4, NIV).
SOMETHING TO PONDER
A few years ago, my family and I went to the beach for vacation. From the waves to the sand, it was a beautiful trip. Until the day I saw a little girl crying out in the ocean. As we approached her, we watched her stumble out of the waves and into the sand sculpture she’d created. But by now, it was a puddle of ruin. Because she’d built her house on sand, the water quickly washed it away. And this is what happens when we trust in someone or something else other than the eternal rock as our firm foundation.
As August blurs into September, many of us feel a similar way. We’re moody, irritable, and heavy. Projects are left unfinished, and surprises spring up that we’d never anticipated. Perhaps we even feel a mix of gratitude and disappointment. Growth and exhaustion.
When Isaiah 26:4 tells us to trust in the Lord forever, it’s because He is the Rock eternal. We’re to trust perpetually because trusting God is an ongoing choice. The Rock eternal reminds us that He alone is our unchanging foundation. And unlike the sand sculpture built on sand, we can stand firm when the oceans rise and surge.
No matter what you’re leaving behind and what you’re taking with you into this next month, I want to remind you that your hope isn’t tied to success. It isn’t tied to the items you checked off your to-do list or the ones that still exist. No, no matter how the month went, our hope is in Jesus Christ, the eternal rock alone. God’s consistency is far greater than our circumstances, time and time again.
So this September, choose to anchor yourself in God. Then, move forward not just with certainty, but with stability. A Stability that comes from placing your hope and trust in someone beyond yourself.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Jesus, this last month was rough. I feel overwhelmed and burdened. I even regret ______ things that happened. But today, I still choose to thank you for what you’ve done and how you’re moving in my life. Thank you for being my firm foundation. I re-anchor my trust in you and look ahead with hope. I love you, Jesus. Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
What have you been carrying from this past month? How can you choose to lay it down today?
Where have you seen God’s steadiness in your life? Journal about these moments and share one with a friend.
What would it look like to trust God moving forward? Write this verse on a sticky note and place it somewhere you can recite it daily.
Reflect on tonight’s prayer and share how God met you there. Join the Your Nightly Prayer discussion on the Crosswalk Forum.
