Your Nightly Prayer

Giving Thanks for God’s Daily Grace
Your Nightly Prayer

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

"The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end." -  Lamentations 3:22, ESV

SOMETHING TO PONDER

There are moments that we wish would never end. The rosy sunset captures our attention and has us standing in awe. The crunch under our shoes and the smoky smell as we leap into freshly raked mounds of leaves with family members. A soul-refreshing talk with a friend. Memories are formed in those moments, but all of them eventually had to end. And that’s true of life for humans, who are but a breath in the wind. Like flowers or mist, we are here one day and gone the next (Job 14:1-2; James 4:14).

Scripture tells us that life might be fleeting, but we can rely on God’s mercy and compassion, which never cease (Exodus 34:6). If everything crumbled around us and everyone we loved deserted us, still the Lord’s love would remain. The essence of His being is to show mercy since He is a compassionate God. As the psalmist reminds us, there is an underlying rhythm throughout Psalm 136: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever” (Psalm 136:1, NIV).

His mercies never end because they are new each morning. This is why the Apostle Paul said we can give thanks in any circumstance (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Surrounded by God’s love and grace, there is always a reason to express our gratitude. Every moment we are alive is an act of the Lord’s provision, and He includes small reminders of His compassion each day.

We see it in the sunset, time with family and friends, or in the simple pleasures of a comforting meal or warm drink. But the greatest reminder of the love of God is the cross. On that tree, Jesus died to bring us life, giving us the undeserved gift of eternal life. Knowing our Savior is more than enough reason to rejoice and give thanks.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Compassionate and gracious God, there will never come a day when Your love runs out. I find Your never-ending mercies hard to fully comprehend because my finite life consists of beginnings and ends. Humans are born and eventually die. We plant and harvest. The stories and songs we share end with a final word or note. Yet still Your love remains. Thank You for the abundance of Your grace, and Your willingness to become poor for our sake, so that we could become rich with salvation and eternal life. May I live in daily gratitude of Your great love–– and continue to praise You throughout eternity. In Jesus’ name, amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Something in your life, whether simple or profound, for which you are thankful. What is it, and how might you share that with God?

2. A symbol of infinity. Traditionally, this includes things like a circle, the Celtic knot, and evergreen trees. How might placing this symbol somewhere you can see it remind you of God’s never-ending love?

3. An activity you do daily. What is it and why do you do it? In what ways might you start making gratitude a habit?

Reflect on tonight’s prayer and share how God met you there. Join the Your Nightly Prayer discussion on the Crosswalk Forum.
