God’s Presence in Quiet Seasons - Your Nightly Prayer - October 5
God’s Presence in Quiet Seasons
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“For the LORD your God is living among you. He is a mighty savior. He will take delight in you with gladness. With his love, he will calm all your fears. He will rejoice over you with joyful songs.” — Zephaniah 3:17 (NLT)
SOMETHING TO PONDER
I’ve walked through seasons when God felt incredibly close—when prayers were being answered, doors were opening, and I could almost trace His hand through everything happening around me. But I’ve also walked through seasons when everything felt painfully quiet.
Some of the hardest seasons of my life were the ones when I was waiting for something I had prayed for over and over again. My husband and I recently went through years of waiting to become parents. We kept experiencing disappointment after disappointment and loss after loss. I would watch months pass without the answer I desperately wanted, and those months turned into years, wondering what God was doing and why He seemed so silent. I wanted movement. I wanted reassurance. Honestly, sometimes I just wanted something that would tell me He had heard me and that I hadn't felt forgotten.
Maybe you’ve been there too.
There’s something about silence that can make us question things we felt certain of before. Did God hear me? Has He forgotten me? Is anything happening at all? But one of the things those seasons taught me is that God’s silence is not the same as God’s absence.
And tonight’s Scripture gives us such a beautiful reminder: “For the LORD your God is living among you.” Before Zephaniah tells us what God will do, it reminds us where He is. He is here. He is right beside you.
Sometimes we become so focused on looking for evidence of God’s movement that we forget to recognize the gift of God’s presence right where we are. We ask Him to change the circumstance, open the door, answer the prayer, reveal the next step, or finally bring something we’ve been waiting for. And those are good things to pray for. But sometimes God meets us in the stillness before anything around us changes.
Looking back at my own waiting seasons, I can see now that God was doing things I couldn’t recognize at the time. He was strengthening my faith. He was teaching me surrender. He was changing parts of my heart. And He was teaching me to recognize Him without needing constant evidence that everything was going according to my plan. The season felt quiet. The season felt like I was forgotten, and the silence felt like God wasn’t working. But God was never inactive.
Maybe you’re in a quiet season tonight. Maybe life isn’t necessarily bad—it just feels still. Maybe something you’ve been praying for hasn’t happened yet. Maybe you’re carrying a loneliness that other people don’t see. Or maybe you’re simply wondering, God, where are You in all of this?
Zephaniah answers that question beautifully: “He is living among you.” And then comes one of my favorite parts: “With his love, he will calm all your fears.”
What if tonight, instead of needing God to explain everything, you simply allowed His presence to quiet you and calm you? You don’t have to know what tomorrow holds before you close your eyes tonight. You don’t need to figure out what God is doing behind the scenes. You don’t have to force something to happen just because life feels still. There is sacred work happening in quiet places. Roots grow beneath the soil before anything appears above it. God can strengthen your faith, heal parts of your heart, deepen your trust, and prepare you for what is ahead long before you can see the evidence.
And even when you cannot see what He is doing, you can know where He is. He is right beside you and available to quiet you with His love.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Father,
Thank You for reminding me tonight that You are here. When life feels quiet, help me not to mistake stillness for Your absence. When I cannot see what You are doing, teach me to trust that You are still working. And when I feel lonely, uncertain, or forgotten, remind my heart that You are near and I am never outside of Your presence. Lord, I confess that sometimes I want answers more than I want stillness. I want to know what comes next. I want to see movement. I want reassurance that everything I’m praying for will work out the way I hope. But tonight, I choose to rest in You, knowing You are here with me. Calm my fears with Your love. Quiet the thoughts that keep racing through my mind. Take the things I cannot control, the questions I cannot answer, and the circumstances I cannot change, and help me place them into Your hands. If You are doing something beneath the surface that I cannot yet see, give me patience to trust You there. Teach me to recognize Your presence and sit in Your presence even when life is quiet. Thank You that You delight in me, love me, and stay with me through every season. Tonight, I release tomorrow into Your hands and I choose to rest in Your love.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
THREE THINGS TO MEDIATE UPON
1. How would this season feel different if I truly believed He is with me even when I cannot see what He is doing?
2. What am I asking God to change when He may be inviting me to simply rest in His presence?
3. What might God be growing in me during this quiet season?
