God’s Protection through the Night
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
The Lord will keep you from all harm; he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. - Psalm 121:7-8
SOMETHING TO PONDER
Every day, our minds are moving.
What needs to get done? Who needs me? What did I forget? Did I respond to that message? Did I handle that conversation the right way? What am I making for dinner? What is on the calendar tomorrow?
The list goes on.
Our days can become so burdened with tasks, responsibilities, conversations, and people who need something from us that we don’t even have room to feel what is happening beneath the surface.
Can you relate?
And then, almost abruptly, the sun starts to set.
Night comes.
The house gets quiet. The computers are shut down. The conversations end. The lights go out. Our bodies finally become still.
But somehow, our minds don't.
Suddenly, the spinning begins.
And usually, it isn't the ordinary things that keep us awake. It's the bigger things. The conversation we keep repeating. The child we're worried about. The diagnosis we're waiting on. We don't know how to fix. The relationship that feels doubtful. The future we can't control.
In the stillness of night, fears that stayed under the surface all day suddenly seem to find their voice.
Our family goes to the beach every year, and this year the home we rented was right on the sound. The view was beautiful. In the middle of the sound stood a huge tree, and at the very top was the largest osprey nest I had ever seen.
It was majestic.
One night, a storm came through. By morning, you could see that the nest had taken a hit. Parts of it had been damaged and displaced by the wind.
And then I watched those birds.
They went to work.
Back and forth they flew, diligently bringing sticks and materials to repair what the storm had disturbed. They couldn't undo the storm, but they could tend to the nest after it.
It made me curious, so I began reading about ospreys and how they care for their young during storms.
Ospreys build large, sturdy nests and continually add to them. When their chicks are young and vulnerable, the parents stay close. They shelter them, provide for them, and after severe weather, they return to the work of repairing and rebuilding.
But here's what struck me:
The osprey cannot control the storm.
It cannot stop the wind from blowing.
It cannot guarantee that a branch won't break.
It cannot make the skies stay calm simply because there are vulnerable babies in the nest.
It prepares. It stays near. It covers. It provides. And when the storm has passed, it rebuilds.
Isn't that so much like our lives?
We cannot always control the storms that come.
And sometimes the storms don't even happen around us; they happen inside us.
Night comes, and suddenly the winds begin blowing through our minds.
What if this happens?
What if something happens to my children?
What if this doesn't work out?
What if I made the wrong decision?
What if tomorrow brings something I'm not prepared to handle?
We may not be able to stop every fearful thought from entering our minds, but we can choose how we respond when it does.
And often, that preparation begins before the storm comes.
Just as that osprey builds and builds up its nest before the wind begins to blow, we can build places of truth in our hearts before nighttime worry arrives.
We remind ourselves of who God is to us.
We remember how He has shown up over and over in our lives.
We fill our minds with His Word.
We rehearse His faithfulness rather than every possible outcome.
We remind our souls: I am not the one holding everything together. God is.
Psalm 121:7–8 gives us this beautiful promise:
“The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”
Notice the repeated words: He will watch over you.
While you are working, He watches.
While you are parenting, He watches.
While you are trying to figure things out, He watches.
And when you turn off the light, close your eyes, and surrender everything you cannot control. He is still watching.
God doesn't clock out when you go to sleep.
You don't have to stay awake keeping watch over everything because He never stops watching over you.
That may be what some of us need to remember when the nighttime worries begin to blow.
The storm may come.
The wind may blow.
Things we love may even get shaken.
But we have a God who is present in the storm, faithful through the storm, and still there when morning comes. For tonight, we can rest in this unwavering promise, and we can trust Him at His word.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Jesus, I have carried my load as far as I can carry it today. Now I give it to You. Watch over my life. Watch over my children. Watch over my marriage. Watch over the situation I cannot fix. Watch over my comings and my goings and watch over my mind as I sleep. And when tomorrow comes, if there is something that needs rebuilding, give me the grace to rebuild it. However, tonight, I will rest because you are still watching. The osprey cannot stop the storm from coming, and neither can we. But we can know where our security is found when it does- the one who watches over us. Remind our hearts tonight that you never sleep and we are in your constant care. Thank you for your faithfulness and love for me, your child.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE ON
What am I carrying tonight that God is asking me to allow Him to carry for me?
What truths about God can I tuck away in my heart before the next storm comes?
What would it look like for me to fully trust God to watch over my life tonight?
