TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE

"I can do all things through him who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13

SOMETHING TO PONDER

This beloved verse of Scripture, Philippians 4:13,  is like a soothing balm to the weary soul. It is often shared among friends, embedded in sermons, quoted in faith-based circles, and offers a simple, yet assuring answer when times are tough. Yet, it’s also a verse that is misunderstood and easily taken out of context. Sure, it may be touted as the “go-to verse” when we grow tired, maybe even feel defeated, but there is so much more to it than the strength we obtain and the nature of our current circumstances. This verse is a powerful reminder that our God is faithful and that His promises are for our benefit and overall good.

The apostle Paul was no stranger to challenges and immense trials; in fact, he likely wrote these ten words when under house arrest awaiting a trial before the Roman Emperor. Paul knew his life was on the line and that Nero was a cruel and evil ruler, despising Christians. That’s why the four short chapters of Philippians are so powerful, as they were written from imprisonment in Rome to the church of Philippi, encouraging them to persevere, unite as brothers and sisters, and express deep gratitude to our God, especially in harsh and desperate times. In Philippians 4:10-19, Paul models for us what gratitude from a place of deep distress looks like. His heart was more than likely heavy, his mind was numb, and his soul was worn out from the strenuous circumstances he was in, yet he humbly relied on God. How? Gratitude. He chose to thank God despite the situation to teach a valuable lesson to the first Christian church in Europe. Regardless of what this life brings, God provides us the strength we need to continue the course, even with all the obstacles. And that is worth rejoicing in!

Dear friend, if your soul is fragile, numb, or almost worn out, cling to the promise here in Philippians that reminds us that “with God” we can do all things. We can humbly come before Him with expectation of His providence and provision. Give God your thanks and praise tonight and seek His insurmountable strength as you rest in the peace of His faithfulness and a renewed hope for tomorrow.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

God,
Thank you for your unfailing and unwavering provision, protection, and providence. You are such a good Father who cares so deeply for His children. I am so grateful to be called Your child and pray to honor You all the days of my life. As I rest tonight, I seek contentment and ask for perseverance as I wade through a season of my life that feels challenging.  May I find hope in You alone when my soul feels weak and lean into Your precious promise that gives me strength to do all things. I ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. How can the lesson Paul provides us in Philippians 4:13 bring you comfort this evening?
  2. How can you praise God for His provision and providence in your current circumstance?
  3. If your soul is fragile, numb, or almost worn out, I invite you to read Philippians 4:10-19. Then allow God to meet you on those pages of His Word and proclaim His peace as you rest in His love tonight.
