Learning Faithfulness in Repetition

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” -Proverbs 28:20

SOMETHING TO PONDER

In our present age, faithfulness is often dismissed and overlooked, especially the kind that requires ongoing, everyday repetition. Instead, people are looking for shortcuts in life and quick ways to become rich, overnight, if possible.

Yet, God tells us that faithfulness is where true riches come from through the act of choosing to be faithful day in and day out, such as accomplishing our work, serving God, taking care of our families, and helping those who need our assistance.

Still, many seem to get hung up on the repetitiveness of faithfulness, finding it takes too much time and is too mundane and boring. They don’t understand how faithfulness cultivates richness in our lives.

Many in our world are more interested in the excitement of skyrocketing to success than in plugging away, spending time doing the same things over and over again, learning, growing, and increasing through repetitive faithfulness in life.

My aunt and cousins worked on factory assembly lines for years, doing the same thing day after day, week after week, month after month, and year after year.

Although I don’t know their coping methods for sticking with it for decades, there can be a satisfaction in being part of something larger, in faithfully contributing to projects bigger than our own, knowing that each part comes together to make a whole.

The Apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 12:12-14 how we, as believers, are all part of one body, each faithfully contributing our part so that we can be whole and function as one.

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so, the body is not made up of one part but of many.”

As God reminds us, faithfulness cultivates lasting riches, the ones that satisfy, and it also works together in the larger picture of life. There is something solid and trustworthy in those who learn the lesson of faithfulness in repetition.

As the Apostle Paul teaches us in 1 Thessalonians 5:24, “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear Father, teach me today and every day to be faithful to the repetitive things in my life, such as repeatedly taking care of everyday, ordinary things and serving others in ways that make their lives better. Encourage me to keep going even when I’m tired or don’t feel like it, whether at home, or work, or at church. Strengthen me to remain steadfast, faithfully fulfilling, repeatedly, all I need to accomplish to stay faithful to You. Remind me daily that my efforts are not in vain, but are working together to accomplish Your will in my life. In Jesus name, Amen

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

1. Are you now, or have you ever, been a part of faithfully contributing to something larger than your own work? If so, what did it teach you along the way?

2. Consider how the faithfulness of others enriches your own life, such as the barista who faithfully brews your favorite coffee day after day, or the garbage crew who faithfully picks up your garbage week after week.

3. What are the ways you are currently being faithful in ordinary ways? Are others benefiting from your repetitive faithfulness? What are you experiencing because of your ongoing faithfulness?
