Praying for Those Fighting Cancer

TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE

“The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.” (Psalm 41:3 NIV)

SOMETHING TO PONDER

I’ve heard it said that a cancer patient is considered a survivor beginning the moment of diagnosis and continuing for the rest of their life. As a two-time cancer survivor myself, I now have a deeper understanding of that saying. I’ve also learned through my battles with cancer that I am not the only one who fights. Family members, caregivers, and friends fight the battle right alongside those of us who call ourselves survivors, and they need prayer covering, too.

During my first journey through cancer, my husband became my primary caregiver. In addition to working a full-time job and pastoring a church, he took me to appointments, stayed with me through treatments, and made things as comfortable as possible at home. Our family pitched in as well, cooking meals, staying with me, and doing household chores. I recall all of us, at times, feeling completely exhausted and overwhelmed. Thankfully, friends and church members covered us in prayer. I don’t know how we would have made it through without faithful prayer warriors interceding for us.

Because of their commitment to pray, we had the strength and motivation we needed when we heard the word “cancer” again and knew another battle was on the horizon.

So many people have been affected by cancer in some way—whether having faced the disease themselves or someone they love has been diagnosed. Psalm 41 offers hope for cancer patients and also those fighting with them.

Cancer has a profound impact not only on a person’s physical health but also on their emotional, mental, and spiritual lives. Psalm 41:3 reminds us we can trust in God’s healing power, “The Lord sustains them on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”

The preceding verses of this psalm refer to God’s blessings and favor upon those who show kindness to the weak. “Blessed are those who have regard for the weak; the Lord delivers them in times of trouble. The Lord protects and preserves them—they are counted among the blessed in the land—he does not give them over to the desire of their foes.” (Psalm 41:1-2) The psalmist's words provide hope-filled truth for people reaching out with compassion to those unable to care for themselves.

Survivors face unfathomable difficulty, and they need family, friends, and caregivers to walk with them on the treacherous and unpredictable road ahead. Brave, caring people who have the courage to step up and offer help. So, as we pray for cancer survivors this month, let’s not forget to include those faithful helpers who are lifting the load so that their loved ones can focus on the fight, one step at a time.

YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER

Dear God,

Thank you for being with those who are fighting cancer. I lift up each cancer patient and ask for healing and restoration in their bodies. Give them peace for the journey ahead when anxiety threatens them. Guide them through any difficult decisions they will face. I pray you will send a friend, family member, or caregiver to be by their side as they battle this horrible disease. Bring the right people to encourage and support them. I pray for those who are willing to step in and fight alongside these warriors. Give them good rest and the energy to meet the challenges ahead. With the comfort you’ve given them, I pray they will be able to comfort another. On days when they become weary from fighting, help cancer survivors and their caregivers find hope in the truth of your Word, “…Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.” (2 Chronicles 20:15) In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON

  1. Do you know someone affected by a cancer diagnosis right now? Add his or her name to tonight’s verse and read it aloud. “The Lord sustains ___ on their sickbed and restores them from their bed of illness.”

  2. Think of one simple way you can bring comfort to someone in the midst of battle.

  3. How is it helpful to know that our battles are ultimately not ours, but God’s?

Go Deeper: Simple Ways to Love Others Well

Most of us want to love people well—especially when they’re hurting—but if we’re honest, we don’t always know how. We worry about saying the wrong thing, doing too little, or showing up too late. And sometimes, because of that uncertainty, we end up doing nothing.

That’s why I’m so grateful for this week’s episode of The Love Offering Podcast. I’m joined by Christy Gandy, owner of Lovewell Collective, whose own experience with grief shaped a beautiful mission: helping people show up for others with practical love, kindness, and care—especially in life’s hardest seasons.

In our conversation, Christy gently reminds us that loving well isn’t about fixing someone’s pain. It’s about helping them feel seen, remembered, and cared for. Sometimes love looks like presence. Sometimes it looks like a note, a prayer, or a small gift left on a porch. And often, it’s the simplest gestures that leave the deepest mark.
