When You Feel Spiritually Distracted
Your Nightly Prayer
by Lynette Kittle
TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE
“One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek Him in His temple” - Psalm 27:4
SOMETHING TO PONDER
It’s easy for life’s distractions to get us off-track, to lead us to wander off the pathway God has planned for us. Daily demands can weigh heavily on our hearts and minds, causing us to focus on them and take our eyes off Jesus. Family responsibilities, work pressure, and even numerous church activities can cause spiritual interruptions, where it feels like we are letting other things fill our hearts and minds rather than seeking after God and spending time with Him. Pursuing God can often take a back seat to the things before us that seem to need our immediate attention, believing God understands and, since He is always there, we can wait until we have free time to spend with Him.
But God doesn’t want to be an afterthought or left to whenever we have free time. He wants to be our top priority, above our families, work, and even our church responsibilities. He’s more interested in our relationship with Him than how productive we can be for Him. God doesn’t want us to schedule Him into our busy lives when it works for us. He wants to inconvenience us, to be the one we put above all others, because He knows when we do, He will help us take care of all the rest. Being spiritually focused needs to take priority because it affects everything else in our lives in amazing ways by giving us wisdom in facing and dealing with all the moving parts in our lives. Family, work, and church all benefit from us ignoring distractions and spiritually refocusing our hearts on the one thing that matters most: our walk with God.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Father,
Forgive me today for the ways I have been spiritually distracted from focusing on You and Your will for my life. Cleanse my heart and mind today from worldly and even ministry distractions that have kept me from daily seeking You. Lead me today to make You the top priority in my life and seek spiritual blessings more than worldly recognition and possessions.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
- Are you currently seeking God? Or have you been distracted in your spiritual life, focusing on other things more than God?
- In what ways can you start making God the priority in your life? Take time to re-evaluate how you spend your time, and ask Him to lead you in making Him your top priority in life.
- To help you refocus on God, think of ways you can purposefully put God first in your daily, weekly, and monthly schedule, writing them down if it helps keep them foremost in your thoughts and actions, and posting them on your phone, mirror, or refrigerator to remind you.
