When You Feel Spiritually Foggy
Your Nightly Prayer

TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
“For this command is a lamp, this teaching is a light, and correction and instruction are the way to life.” - Proverbs 6:23, NIV
SOMETHING TO PONDER
The road ahead was dark and foggy. Between the pouring rain and pounding thunder, my thoughts began to spin.
Where am I?
Am I going the right way?
What if a tornado hits my car?
What if I wreck?
Am I lost?
Though I was less than half an hour from my hometown, I was second-guessing every turn. Why? Because in the night, fog makes everything difficult to see. We don’t know what’s ahead, where we’re going, or how to move forward. Sometimes, the same thing can happen in our lives, too.
Spiritual fog feels like a prayer that’s flat. We’re talking to God, but hear nothing in reply. God doesn’t just feel distant, He feels absent. And Scripture? It’s confusing, dry, and dull. Have you been in this place? On one hand, spiritual fog is normal. It isn’t failure; it's a part of being human. But spiritual fogginess isn’t an excuse to stay where we are. Instead, it requires intentional reorientation. In Proverbs 6:23, we read that God’s commands are a lamp to our feet. This means that He gives us step-by-step clarity for our paths through the guidance and direction of His Word. We also see that His teaching is a light. Not only is it a light in our lives, but also in the lives of those we share His message with. And when we get off the path or stumble in the dark, He gently corrects us and places us on the right road.
You and I don’t need full, 100% clarity to keep going when things are foggy. Sometimes, this fog can even keep us more dependent on Him. But we do need just enough light to take the next step. If you’re feeling spiritually distant or disconnected today, try returning to the Lord in small, simple rhythms. Pray short prayers and meditate on one verse instead of a dozen. Then, choose to stay even when you don’t feel anything. Because faith is rooted in action, not just feeling. Fog doesn’t mean the road has disappeared; it just means we might need to trust the light more than our feelings. And perhaps learning to trust what we can’t see instead of what we can has always been the point. For “Faith is what makes real the things we hope for. It is proof of what we cannot see” (Hebrews 11:1, ERV).
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Dear Jesus,
I’m feeling lost in a fog of confusion. I confess to these frustrations and the distance between us. Please pour light, clarity, and a renewed hunger for you into my life. I surrender the need to “feel” everything. Help me to trust you and know you more. You’re my steady light and will lead me where I’m meant to go. I love you, Lord.
Amen.
THREE THINGS TO MEDITATE UPON
- Where do you feel the most spiritual fog right now? Journal about this to God.
- What is one small “light” God’s already given you? Choose to share this light with someone this week.
- What would it look like to trust God one step at a time tonight? Pray before bed and ask God to show you how you can practically do this.
