When You’re Tired of Reinventing Yourself
TONIGHT’S SCRIPTURE
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. - Colossians 3:3
SOMETHING TO PONDER
This entry releases the pressure to keep remaking yourself and rests in your identity in Christ.
Recently, there has been a wave of viral videos of women in midlife who are boldly declaring they just don’t care. I love these videos partly because I, too, am close to midlife and understand the general sentiment they express. Life is too short to care too much about vanity. Additionally, they poke at a truth: we are all working so hard to be this perfect version of ourselves, and eventually the work to be becomes exhausting.
The beautiful thing about the Gospel is that it frees us from striving to find meaning or validation. In Christ alone, we are offered an identity, a purpose, and a firm foundation for our lives. No more reinvention of self is necessary; God loves us just as we are. All he asks for is us. He wants the you that he knit together in your mother’s womb. One he so creatively put together to tell a just you story. He loves you just as you are.
With Jesus at the center of our stories, we can let go of the stress we have been carrying to keep up with a cultural trend or to meet a certain expectation. We can find rest in him. Acceptance that is soul-deep. An eternal purpose. What a gift it is to be sons and daughters of the King!
You are invited to let go of whatever false burden you have been carrying to be something the world says you should be. Find rest in the Lord. Seek first His Kingdom, and you are promised that everything else you need will be there too.
YOUR NIGHTLY PRAYER
Father, I thank you that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. That you knew me in my mother’s womb. There is nothing wrong with who I am. I am loved by you. Help me to find rest in you. To embrace my identity as your son or daughter. Let your love and acceptance permeate my soul. I thank you for calling me out of darkness and into the light. Help me care about the things that you care about. Guide me towards you, and towards Heaven. Amen.
