6 Closing Prayers for Small Groups That Help the Truth Take Root

Small group studies can help us grow in our knowledge of God’s Word, collectively apply those truths to our lives, and draw us closer together with other believers. Transformation of our hearts is the goal, as well as growing in unity and transparency with other believers and sharpening one another in Scripture, as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17).

It can be especially challenging, though, when a topic arises in a small group that causes disagreement. Or, when we learn something that rubs up against our personal convictions or lifestyle preferences.

Scripture exhorts us to prove ourselves “doers of the word, and not just hearers who deceive themselves” (James 1:22). “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was.  But one who has looked intently at the perfect law, the law of freedom, and has continued in it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an active doer, this person will be blessed in what he does” (James 1:23-25 NASB).

Do you want to be blessed in what you do? Do you desire the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23) to be prominently displayed in your life? If so, here are six session-ending prayers for your small group to help the truth take root and bring transformation to your lives.

1. A Prayer for Increased Understanding

Bible Study

Lord God, the psalmist prayed in Psalm 119:18: “Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.” Open our eyes and hearts, dear Father, to understand, accept, and hold onto the truths we have learned in our time together. Increase our understanding of spiritual things and give us minds and hearts to comprehend Your thoughts and ways, as Isaiah 55:8-11 assures us that Your thoughts are different than our thoughts and Your ways are higher than ours. Thank You for Your promise in that passage that Your Word will not go forth and return empty, without accomplishing the purposes for which You desire. Accomplish Your purposes in us, Lord Jesus, by causing us to understand and apply Your Holy Word. In Jesus’ powerful name, we pray this. Amen.

2. A Prayer for Wisdom and Discernment

Man reading the Bible for wisdom.

Heavenly Father, thank You for this time we’ve had together to study and discuss Your Word. Lord, sometimes having an open mind to whatever is presented to us in our culture can become a danger when there are so many worldly philosophies and winds of errant doctrine that can easily blow our way. Give us spiritual discernment to hear Your voice of truth and open hearts to receive what Your Spirit is making clear to us in spite of the culture in which we live.

Grant us wisdom and discernment to distinguish Your Spirit’s voice from the enemy’s voice or that of our own fleshly or deceptive thoughts. May You convict and comfort our hearts through the indwelling Holy Spirit and open our eyes to the truths You want us to live out. Your Word says if any of us lacks wisdom, we can ask You for it, and You will give “to all generously and without reproach” when we ask for it in faith (James 1:5-6 NASB). Lord, we ask for Your wisdom so we can properly discern the truth, cling to it, and apply it to our daily lives. We pray this in the name of Jesus, whose Holy Spirit guides and directs us. Amen.

3. A Prayer for Unity in the Group

Lord Jesus, You prayed in John 17:20-21 that Your followers, and all who would come to believe through them, would be unified with one another as You were one with Your Father.  Lord, we desire that unity as well, in light of all that we have learned in our time together. Sanctify us in Your truth and help us to follow the instructions for unity in Your Word so that “if there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion,” we would make Your joy “complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” Help us to do “nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than [ourselves]” (Philippians 2:1-3 NASB). We ask these things in the name of Jesus, amen.

4. A Prayer for Open Hearts to Respond to God’s Truth

Lord, help us to not only be receptive to the truth of Your Word, but responsive in applying it to our lives as You desire.

May our hearts be like good, softened soil in receiving the seeds of truth from Your Word, not like the hardened or rocky ground that won’t let Your truths sink in. Father, keep the enemy of our souls from snatching up the truths You want to plant firmly in our hearts, and don’t let the worries of this world—like weeds—choke the seeds of Your Word. May they instead germinate in our hearts and produce much spiritual fruit that is pleasing to You (Mark 4:14-20). Lord, it is our heart’s transformation, our ability to become more like You, that is our true testimony to this world of what it means to follow Jesus. Help us to live your transforming truths daily. We pray this in the name of Jesus, who causes all growth and transformation to happen. Amen.

5. A Prayer for Responsibly Receiving the Truths of Scripture

Heavenly Father, may the truth we have been exposed to from Your Word result in much fruit in our lives. May we “not be conformed to this world [by the ideologies and philosophies of our culture], but be transformed by the renewing” of our minds so that we “may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect” (Romans 12:1-2 NASB).

Father, help us to be diligent to present ourselves “approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15 NASB). Guard our hearts with a biblical world view, not a secular one, so that we can run everything through the grid of Scripture, adhering to Your truths, not the claims or empty philosophies of this world. May we be as the Bereans, who received Your Word “with great eagerness” and examined the Scriptures daily to see whether the doctrines being taught by others were true (Acts 17:11). It is in Your name, Jesus, that we pray, and in Your Word that we trust. Amen.

6. A Prayer for the Protection of Your Hearts and Minds

Church group praying

Lord God, thank You for the wonderful gift of Your Word. Help us to hold onto the truths we have learned, and please protect our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as we do. Lord, Your Word tells us to cast all our anxieties (about every matter we can think of) onto You, and to be of sober spirit and on the alert for our “adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:7-8).

Help us to hold onto the truths of Your Word by being strong in the Lord and the strength of His might and putting on the whole armor of God so we will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:10-11). “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore, [help us to] take up the full armor of God, so that [we] will be able to resist on the evil day” (verses 12-13). Having done all this, help us to stand firm, having belted our waists with truth (so You and Your Word are at our center), and having put on the breastplate of righteousness (to guard our hearts), and having strapped on our feet the preparation of the gospel of peace.  In addition to all of this, help us to take up the shield of faith so we will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  And securely set on us the helmet of salvation to guard our minds and help us to keep our hands and hearts on  \the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. In all this, help us to stand firmly in a defensive position, not trying to go on the offense against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places, but instead, obey Your command to be on the alert, and “pray at all times in the Spirit” for each other and for our perseverance and theirs in this spiritual battle (verses 15-18).  It is in Your powerful, protective name we pray this. Amen.
