We turn on the news it seems like daily and find reports of death, tragedies, division, and people left behind with their lives torn apart. So many of us have grown numb in efforts to not completely fall apart at the weight of so much pain in our world.
Yet despite how heavy this all feels, we can lean upon Jesus in these trying times.
We can come before Him in prayer for harmony, unity, and peace to flow out in our lives and land.
Father God, We come before you, broken people in need of a Perfect Savior. Lord, we know that we live in a fallen world, and in a fallen world dissonance often becomes the resounding theme. Lord, we know You are the God of peace, the God not of confusion, and the One True God. In those truths, we stand and we pray for harmony among our people. Lord, we pray against spirits of conflict, we pray against the stirrings of the Enemy to cause chaos, and we pray for Your Spirit to pour out among men. May Your song of peace and love be the song we come into agreement to sing, and may we keep our eyes and minds focused on You. Lord, please usher in a time of harmony among men, a time in which we humbly submit to You.
In Jesus Name, Amen
2. Prayer for Unity
Lord Jesus, We are reminded in John 17 Your prayer for Your people. Hours before Your death Your heart was to pray for us, may we soak in that for a moment. Lord, when You say in John 17:11, “so that they may be one as we are one” we are reminded Your heart for unity. Help us to be united in Your Spirit. Help us to join together and move forward in the spirits of love, kindness, empathy, and unity. May our hearts be sensitive to Your leadership in how we can live out unity each day, may our spirits be moldable to Your sculpting, and may we live by Your example. Help us to be joined together, bound by Your Spirit.
Lord God, We lift up the victims and those close to the victims of recent events. Lord, senseless shootings and killings have torn lives apart. Our hearts break for these victims and their loved ones. Please comfort them in their grief, please hold them in their heartache, and please pour out our sincere prayers upon them in love. We pray for healing and consolation in their sorrow, and we pray that they may draw near to You in these trying times. We pray too Lord that the lives lost from these senseless crimes would not be forgotten, but that we would remember them and the beauty they brought to this world. We pray for their souls, and we sincerely pray Lord that crimes such as mass shootings would cease. Lord, we know that is straight of the heart of Satan to cause such insidious and senseless death and havoc, and Lord we pray against it.
In Jesus Name, Amen
4. Prayer for the Church
Lord God, We pray for the Church during this time. Lord, the Church is not just a building to be visited on Sundays, it is the Body of Believers You came to this earth to save. We pray for the Church to come together and work together in unison to be a vessel of Your Light in this dark World. May we be driven to come before You humbly for direction, guidance, and wisdom in how to navigate these times, but also how we may be the difference during this time. May we be used to encourage, uplift, and bless those around us and may we ever be pointing others to You. As You said, “As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world.” May the difference in who we are be You, Lord. Please pour out Your Spirit among Your children, and lead us in how to be in the world, but not of it.
Lord God, Our leaders in this nation need our prayers. Whether we voted for them or not, and whether we agree with them on every issue or not, they are still Your creation and they have been given a seat in leadership for a reason. Father, we pray for their souls individually. May they be transformed by the working of the Holy Spirit and Lord may they use their positions for Your glory. We pray for wisdom for each of them as they navigate from day to day, we pray for discernment of what is right and what is wrong, and Lord we pray that their hearts would come to know You so intimately that they are like David, men and women after Your own heart. Lord, we pray for them in this age, and we pray for the leaders to come. We know no matter who sits in Oval Offices, Congress, or Governor’s Chairs, ultimately You Lord are Sovereign, and Father we pray those in such seats will seek Your face today and in the days to come.
In Jesus Name, Amen
6. Prayer for Future Generations to Come
Lord Jesus, In John 17:23 You pray for the generations to come, and so do we. We know that these generations will be effected by the things we do currently. Lord, we pray out Your words, “May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that You sent Me and have loved them even as You have loved Me.” May the generation to come know You intimately and personally, and may they be driven by nothing else but Your love and Spirit. We lift those not even born yet up to You, Lord. We pray for the generations to come, and we pray for the world they will inherit. May seasons of unity begin with us and be received by them.
In Jesus Name, Amen
It is easy to feel overwhelmed and downcast by all we see occurring on the news, but we do not fight these battles alone. We serve God, and through Him nations rise and nations fall, but He endures.
He is a God of peace and of unity, not of discord and confusion. Let us lean into Him, and follow His leading towards a new dawn to come.
