How Christians Can Pray for Former President Biden’s Health Despite Political Differences

The nation was stunned when the announcement was made on Sunday about former President Joe Biden being diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer. A spokesperson told USA Today that Biden's cancer has a Gleason score of 9, Grade Group 5. Though prostate cancer is the most common cancer for men, there is also a high survival rate if it's caught early enough, according to WebMD. That being said, prostate cancer is still the second leading cause of death in American men, right behind lung cancer, according to The American Cancer Society.

The political polarization in America has grown intense over the course of the past 25 years or so. Political campaigns have become opportunities to air any scandal, big or small, that a political opponent can dig up, no matter how far back in someone's history. The intense rhetoric and biased mainstream media have ushered in divisiveness and polarization among the general American population, so that having a civil discussion about politics is nearly impossible anymore. If a person takes their political views to social media, arguments can quickly get out of hand. Sadly, these political disagreements have even hurt relationships between friends and family. This shows how important it is to listen and pray for one another with kindness and respect, even when we don’t agree.

One of the most challenging times to pray for others can be when we don't see eye to eye, whether due to differences in political beliefs, values, or life choices. It's not always easy, especially when we feel hurt or misunderstood. Yet, Jesus reminds us in Matthew 5:43-46 to pray not just for our friends, but even those who oppose or mistreat us.

Choosing this route helps us guard our hearts against resentment and stay aligned with God's call for us to love others. Prayer helps soften our hearts, shift our perspectives, and open the door for God to work in powerful ways.

Many political leaders have set aside their political differences and offered their condolences and prayers for the Bidens, including President Trump. If you're wondering how you can pray for former President Biden, follow along with our prayer below:

Prayer for Former President Biden

Lord Jesus,

Thank you that Your Word tells us that You are ultimately in control of which world leaders hold their position of power, and that You are able to work through any circumstance and cause it to work out for our good and for Your glory.

Thank you that You always have our best interests at heart, even in the times when we sin and are undeserving. Thank you that You are overly, exceedingly, abundantly able to bring us the peace that passes understanding when we need it, comfort when we have a broken or crushed heart, and You can even bring healing to us.

We ask that You would be with Joe Biden, Jill Biden and the rest of the family during this difficult time, and that You would especially lead the Bidens in regard to the best courses of action to take during this challenging time in their lives.

In the name of Jesus,

Amen.
