4 Bible Verses to Get You through a Long Winter

Wintertime can be absolutely beautiful with the snow flakes, hot cocoa, and cute scarves. However it is also known as a very depressing time of year for many people. With the cold weather and looming clouds, it can be a time of sadness and isolation. Neighbors hide away inside their homes for warmth and sunshine seems to be few and far between. Lack of vitamin D is a real issue for many and being cold gets old. Holidays are full of family fun and community, but once the new year hits we have two or three months of winter left for us. Today, we are going to look at Bible verses to help get you through the winter.

There is actually a diagnosis for people called Seasonal Affective Disorder (AKA: Winter Blues). The Mayo Clinic defined Seasonal Affective Disorder as, “A type of depression that's related to changes in seasons — SAD begins and ends at about the same times every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, sapping your energy and making you feel moody.”

Maybe you fall into this category, or maybe you are simply worn out from COVID taking eons to end and the stressors of life in quarantine? Or perhaps you love winter and all that it has to offer? Whoever you are, we can actually learn a lot about wintertime through God’s Word, and lean into Scripture to help us look to Christ in this intentional season that the Lord created.

Isaiah 55:10-11 - “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

Whether you love this season or not, winter serves a purpose. It is a time of watering the ground preparing for the spring to come. K-5 Impact News shares that winter is beneficial because plants and trees need times to be dormant in order to have energy restored for new growth and to produce fruit. They also provide protection for our health.

Winter keeps bugs from becoming overpopulated and spreading more diseases. Some studies reveal that people think more clearly and sleep better in the winter. They also bring up the point that we need winter simply so other parts of the world can have summer.

When pondering the necessity for a season of slowness and chill, it reminds us of our spiritual lives. We are not always in the easiest seasons of life. Winter reminds us that God is working in every moment of our lives, even the ones we do not understand or enjoy. The Lord knows that trials will help produce endurance in us (James 1:2-6). We can be reminded that the “winter” times are purposeful for future growth and for our good.

Job 37:6-7 - “He says to the snow, Fall on the earth,’ and to the rain shower, Be a mighty downpour. So that everyone he has made may know his work, he stops all people from their labor.”

Winter reminds us that God is in control. When we see how everything lines up for a snowfall, or walk outside in the frigid wind, we know that there is a power greater than us. Nature points to the existence and glory of God and this includes the cold and rainy season.

I also love how this verse says, “He stops all people from their labor.” Winter is a season that causes us to slow down. In our fast pace and busy world, it is important to sabbath. The Lord has provided a season where we are meant to rest. Just like we see animals go into hibernation, our own bodies and minds benefit from a season of slow.

Isaiah 1:18 - “'Come now, let us settle the matter,' says the LORD. 'Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.'"

Snow in wintertime reminds us of the miracle of Jesus washing our sins whiter than snow by His blood on the cross. Winter can remind us of our dead state and the need for a Savior. Winter can point to the great depths of brokenness and emptiness within ourselves that can only by met by Christ.

Song of Solomon 2:11-12 - “See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”

Winter reminds us that this is not forever. It will get warm again, the sun will shine more, the plants and flowers will bloom. Just like we are in a broken and sinful world, winter reminds us of the hope that we have in Heaven. Things here are not going to get better, however Heaven is waiting for us and we have great confidence in the beauty and security unfolding for our eternity. Winter tells us the story off our own souls trapped in a cold and dark place in need of the Light of the World to break through. Winter reminds us that we need Jesus.

I hope and pray that these Bible verses will help get you through the winter. It is encouraging to think about the joy we can have and hold onto during this season that is so often dreaded or barely tolerated. Winter serves a greater purpose of preparing for the spring.

Maybe you are in a winter season of life. Hold on tight to Jesus and know that He is refining you and growing you in this time to produce more fruit for His kingdom purposes.
