Staying Grounded During Life Changes

Life is changing all the time, from the smallest of things to bigger things that we can or can’t control. Things like arriving half an hour earlier than at your previous job, or getting into a car accident. Seasons change, as do people and relationships. When these things pile up, it can become overwhelming. Therefore, staying spiritually grounded during times of change is so important. We need Jesus every minute of every day, especially when things are changing. Here are some ways to stay spiritually grounded during times of change.
Embracing God’s Unchanging Nature in Changing Seasons
We all go through seasons of life that are both joyful and sorrowful. There are seasons of growth, seasons of waiting, seasons of loss, and seasons of abundance. Like nature, our lives are in constant motion. Seasons of blessing can turn to seasons of grief; seasons of clarity can turn to confusion. Therefore, God's stability is so important. He is unchanging yesterday, today, and forever.
Malachi 3:6 tells us, “I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed.”
During seasons of uncertainty, we need to remember:
● God’s love remains constant.
● His promises remain sure.
● His character is trustworthy.
Creating a Seasonal Prayer Rhythm
Creating a seasonal prayer rhythm is a great way to navigate through both nature’s seasons and our lives. Instead of praying the same way all the time, craft your prayers around the seasons, what’s going on around you, and how you are feeling inside.
Why Seasonal Prayer Matters
Having a seasonal prayer rhythm can address different struggles in your prayer life. Things like…
● It prevents our prayer lives from becoming stale. Praying the same words over time can make our prayer lives feel mechanical; seasonal transitions keep it fresh and help us be more attentive.
● It connects prayer to lived experience. Different seasons bring emotional and practical realities. When your prayer rhythm changes with the seasons, it helps bring your actual life into conversation with God.
● It supports spiritual formation because certain themes are easier to embody at certain times. For example, winter is ideal for stillness and contemplation, while spring invites boldness and new commitments.
● Structured prayer creates order, something we all crave in our lives.
● It helps you notice God in time by paying attention to time not only as a schedule but as a gift, encouraging awareness of change, waiting, harvest, loss, or renewal.
The Core Elements of Seasonal Prayer
● Season-specific Themes
● Time-based structure
● Practices that match the season (scripture meditation, silence and contemplative prayer, intercession)
● Reflection and review
Anchoring Your Heart in Scripture During Transitions
Transition exposes the quiet parts of our souls. When life shifts, and things become uncertain, our hearts want something solid. This is when scripture comes in. It’s not a quick fix or a band-aid, rather an anchor; steady and secure.
Why Does Transition Feel So Unsteady?
During transitions, we often ask ourselves;
● What if I fail?
● What if I lose what I have?
● What if I cannot adapt?
● What if God is not leading me the way I thought?
● What if I don’t have what it takes in the next season?
Scripture as an Anchor
Therefore, scripture is so important during times of transition. Scripture…
● Reminds us who God is.
● Reorients our perspective.
● Scripture steadies our emotions.
● Guides our steps.
Scriptures for seasons of change…
“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” (Isaiah 41:10, NLT)
“God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come, and the mountains crumble into the sea.” (Psalm 46:1-2, NLT)
Guarding Your Mind and Spirit from Seasonal Distractions
As the seasons change, so do other things in our lives. Some seasons are busier with rhythms, responsibilities, and emotions. Some seasons bring celebration and connection, like the holidays, while other seasons, like summer, bring busyness. Different seasons can easily bring distractions. When we guard our minds from seasonal distractions, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy ourselves; it means that we learn to stay grounded when the world becomes louder and more chaotic. This means cultivating steadiness on the inside so that the calendar does not control your peace.
Why Our Minds and Spirits Need Protection
Our minds and spirits influence each other. When our minds are in chaos, our spirits often are too. What weakens our spirits often clouds our minds as well. This can lead to anxiety and irritability, spiritual dryness, compromised priorities, emotional exhaustion, and a loss of clarity and purpose.
Establishing Anchors of Stability
● Daily stillness, take time to be still and think about the things of God.
● Consistent spiritual habits include reading your Bible daily and praying.
● Set healthy boundaries; you don’t have to answer that text, email, or message right away.
● Rhythms of rest: get a good night’s sleep.
● Intentional community: surround yourself with those who share your faith.
Staying Connected to Christian Community and Fellowship
During times of transition, attending church and staying connected to your church family are important. Gather with your small group and talk about what’s going on in your life, ask for advice and help, and ask them to pray with you and for you throughout this change. This will keep you grounded and give you comfort knowing people are there for you and praying for you.
Using Nature’s Changes to Reflect on God’s Faithfulness
Taking a walk in nature is one of the best ways to ease a transition. Nature has a way of calming our minds and hearts, helping us enjoy all of God’s creation. Take a walk and focus on the trees, leaves, plants, and animals God has created. Pause and enjoy the silence and quiet stillness. Find somewhere to sit and take it all in. This will help calm you so that you can better focus on a problem or the next step. During your walk, have a conversation with Jesus; it’s a great way to hear his voice without all the noise and chaos of the world.
Maintaining Healthy Rest, Routine, and Sabbath Rhythms
Healthy rhythms are especially important during a transition. When you’re moving, it’s easy to grab takeout and fast food while you’re trying to load everything up and then unload it. If you’re anticipating a new job, it’s easy to have sleepless nights, wondering if it’s going to be a good fit, how your bosses and coworkers are going to be, and whether you'll be able to learn everything. This may cause you to take a sleep aid a few nights a week. A heavier workload may require you to work on Sundays. These are all legitimate scenarios where things can get out of whack. We’ve all been there.
Instead, a little planning will help. If you’re moving, pack a box with one or two pans, silverware, a bowl, and a plate for everyone in your home, a dishrag and towel, a small bottle of dish soap, and some easy things to make like boxed mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, cereal, and canned soup. Instead of loading it onto the moving truck, put it in your car. This way, it’s easily accessible, and you will have some meals on hand to get you started.
If you can’t sleep, try yoga, hot tea or milk, a noise machine (to drown out noise), journaling, or prayer. This may help you sleep better without taking anything.
If you have a heavier workload, ask for help so you won’t have to work on Sundays and can rest, as God calls us to do.
Lifting Seasonal Stress and Emotion to God in Prayer
Life and transitions are hard. When things feel uncertain or unbearable, lift your stress and emotions to God in prayer and do your best to release them to him.
Dear Lord, things are changing, and it’s getting too heavy for me to bear. You know my stressors and my emotions in this situation. I release them to you so that you can help me find rest and work things out according to your will. Amen.
Trusting God’s Purpose in Every Season of Life
Transition is hard, and when things don’t go the way we want, it’s easy to ask, ‘Why is this happening to me?’ Instead, we should ask, ‘What is God doing through this?' or ‘What is God trying to teach me?” Regardless of how things are going, we need to trust Jesus in every season of our lives and that he knows what he’s doing. He’s had our days planned out for us since before we were born and knows every hair on our heads, after all. He knows what’s best for us.
Transition is hard, but by staying spiritually grounded, we can move forward with grace and peace.
