Athletes have a passion for playing sports that’s rarely understood by others who aren’t athletes themselves. The hours of grueling training, proper diet, adequate sleep, and sometimes painful sacrifices are fueled by a determination to be the best and a craving to win each and every game.

Those who excel are often given a plethora of media attention that can lead to fame, fortune, and, ultimately, an identity rooted in being a professional athlete. That’s where Athletes in Action Sports Ministry and its new president, Coach Eric Nelson come in.

Athletes in Action Teaches Athletes about True Identity

Athletes in Action is designed to teach athletes that they are more than their sport, recognize that God has given them a very special platform onto which many other people don’t get to step, and teach them how to share the gospel message of hope using their sports platform as a tool. Athletes in Action (the sports ministry of Cru) is located in over 85 countries and has been around since 1966. Part of its mission is to challenge athletes to find their identity in Christ rather than in sports.

Coach Eric Nelson has over 38 years of experience working with other coaches and athletes and has a passion for developing athletes physically, mentally, and spiritually. Not only has the former athletic director and basketball coach led basketball projects in 15 countries, but he was also paramount in creating the Athletes in Action International Coaches Academy. This ministry offers elite training and leadership development to coaches from all over the world. Previous to being appointed the new president for Athletes in Action, Nelson served as the Vice President of Athletes in Action’s catalytic ministries.

“We want to help develop total Athletes—players who are growing physically, mentally and spiritually,” Nelson told the Christian Newswire. “I’m honored to lead a team helping athletes and coaches maximize their influence by leveraging character, leadership and athletic excellence.”

Athletes in Action Caters to Multiple Sports

Athletes in Action reaches out to athletes in cycling, the NFL, pro soccer, and basketball, according to their website, as well as athletes in swimming, baseball, golf, softball, track and field and more. They help connect athletes to a community of other Christian athletes so they can encourage one another to be strong in their faith even as they’re a Christ-like example to others.

Athletes in Action has a sports complex and retreat center in Xenia, Ohio with a state-of-the-art field house, and hosts over 200,000 visitors each year through practices, games, team building, special events, and retreats.

Multiple summer sports camps are already available, and those who are interested can browse the options and sign up here
