Christian Filmmaker Andrew Erwin Focuses on Creating Films Depicting 'Bold Faith Meets Authentic Humanity'

The demand for Christian movies is growing. The genre is no longer considered a niche market, and some Christian movies have even earned significant spots at the box office, including the number one spot. In fact, a study in 2025 found that 60 percent of adults in America watch or listen to Christian media at least once per week, according to Movieguide.
Andrew Erwin is one of several Christian filmmakers who are hearing the hearts of people who want quality entertainment that complements their values rather than assaults them. Erwin was a part of creating movies such as I Can Only Imagine, Jesus Revolution, Unsung Hero, American Underdog, and more.
“We kind of built Kingdom Story Company on the idea of being a place to curate voices, to where we kind of speak into each other’s stuff. It’s kind of with filmmakers by filmmakers to tell stories of redemption,” Erwin told CBN in an interview.
He went on to note that he believes, “…there’s just been a craving, I think, right now in America in particular for bold faith….especially the younger generation, the under 25 crowd, they’re like, ‘Give me something concrete, that’s real to believe in.’”
Erwin pointed out that this desire could be “hijacked” by movie companies with a wrong intention, but that when it comes to Christianity and the idea of redemption, “I think they’re [the Christian audience] looking for something really firm to believe in. And so I think the differentiators in our brand is the idea of bold faith meets authentic humanity.”
Erwin explained that authentic human emotions combined with a storyline that’s “relatable and believable…is where you get rid of all the Christian film cheese…the closer you get those two things together, there’s this magic friction in the middle and of not compromising either side of that aisle, that’s where you get a Jesus Revolution [film].”
In his interview with Focus on the Family’s PluggedIn movie reviewer Bret Eckelberry, Erwin said, “I love collaborating. I love sharing ideas,” because he feels that collaboration offers “room for discovery” and being surprised, even as two strong individuals work through the “messy compromise” of collaboration to “make something beautiful.”
When it comes to making films, Erwin told CBN that if a person is chasing filmmaking for notoriety or fame, they’ll be disappointed in the end because people have short memories and fame and notoriety don’t last.
“The things that last are telling stories that are eternal and impacting people’s lives,” he said.
He encouraged those who want to go into Christian filmmaking to consider, “Do you tell stories you believe in? Are you there on mission? Are you working with people that you care about? And are you doing something that you love? And if you do those things, then it [staying on mission] becomes very clear.”
