What Christians Need to Know about Trump's Tariffs, Canadian Wildfires
Canada was subjected to new wildfires that broke out on Friday. This time, they began raging in Western Canada. They’re also still rampant in Ontario and other parts of Canada. Southern British Columbia has been hit with 90 active wildfires, and 25 orders to evacuate as of Friday.
“The weather forecast is far from favorable. There is no significant help from Mother Nature whatsoever in the foreseeable future,” Incident Commander Hugh Murdoch of a cluster of fires near Kimberley, B.C., 520 km (323 miles) from Vancouver, told WTVB.
At Least 20 States in America Impacted by Wildfire Smoke
The smoke from the wildfires has had a negative air quality impact on at least 20 states in the U.S., prompting officials to warn those who are elderly, have respiratory challenges or are pregnant to remain indoors as much as possible, according to The Guardian.
Trump has accused Canada of “willful neglect” in forest management and has threatened to impose tariffs on Canada to help cover the economic damage to America.
"We are holding Canada responsible for the fact that they are not properly maintaining their Forests, and Brush therein, and the United States is being unnecessarily invaded by filthy, polluted, and unhealthy air, the quality of which is dangerous, and totally unacceptable!" Trump wrote in a Truth Social post, which was picked up by Fox News.
He went on to note that he intended to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to discuss the situation and how he would address it.
“This is the third consecutive year we have had to write to Canadian officials about a crisis that Canada has the tools to prevent and has chosen not to,” GOP Reps. John James, Jack Bergman, John Moolenaar and Lisa McClain, all of Michigan, wrote in a letter to Carney, according to The Hill.
“If Canada will not manage its forests to prevent these fires, the United States will look elsewhere, and act on our own, to protect our people,” they added.
The whopping 50 percent tariffs that Trump finally imposed included many Canadian products, but were especially focused on motor vehicles, alcohol and dairy products. Approximately $20 billion in Canadian goods that enter the U.S. will be affected, according to MSN. Technically, the tariffs are over “Canada’s discriminatory treatment of American products,” and not connected to the wildfires, according to WhiteHouse.gov. However, Trump has threatened to levy tariffs due to the wildfire smoke that has drifted over the border.
Canada’s Response to Getting Its Wildfires Under Control
Some have floated the idea of cloud seeding to try to get a bit of help from Mother Nature, but scientists say more research is really needed to figure out how it can be effectively used, according to Global News.
In addition, any clouds present during a forest fire have complications not present in typical clouds.
“One of the difficulties with forest fires is that the smoke itself has a sterilizing effect on the clouds above. The fires, fire smoke and the particles make the cloud droplets much smaller, and it makes it difficult for them to actually naturally precipitate, let alone through processes of artificial injection. The clouds are sterile after a forest fire,” Stanford University’s earth system science department chair, Robert Jackson, told CBC Radio Canada.
In a meeting with emergency officials last week, Canada’s Prime Minister Carney summarized some of the actions being taken by Canada and its emergency crews, which included dispatching 300 water bombers, helicopters and reconnaissance and evacuation aircraft in active support of the wildfire response operations. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has deployed four CC-130 Hercules aircraft in support of 13 evacuation flights from Eabametoong First Nation (Fort Hope). He also went on to state all the technology that firefighters are using in firefighting and rescue efforts, according to a Canadian government public statement.
