Georgia Teacher Killed in Prank Gone Wrong
In Atlanta, Georgia, a community is mourning the loss of a math teacher and coach at North Hall High School. The culprit? An 18-year-old charged with vehicular homicide in a tragic prank gone wrong.
On Friday, March 6th, 2026, student Jayden “Jay” Wallace and his friends decided to play a prank on their beloved teacher, Jason Hughes. Though this teacher “meant the world” to him, Wallace wanted to throw toilet paper at Hughes' house as part of their junior/senior prank.
Rather than an angry confrontation, the father of two was "excited and waiting to catch them in the act," his wife, Laura, told The New York Times.
Unfortunately, at 11 pm that evening, Hughes confronted the teens and was run over when the teens got into their cars and began driving away. According to Atlanta News, “Hughes tripped and fell before being run over. Wallace was charged with homicide by vehicle in the first degree.”
Upon learning of the incident, Wallace’s family expressed deep remorse. “He took the time to invest in Jay and poured his love into him, making a lasting impact,” the family said.
Despite such a tragedy, Hughes’ wife has decided to drop any charges against the teens, noting that this was a “terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students.”
As teachers, both Hughes and his wife devoted themselves to teaching. According to the New York Post, the prank gone wrong on this evening had evolved into an ongoing battle where students lost "points" if the teacher caught them in the act.
Wallace has made the following statement in response to the tragedy: “I pledge to live out the remainder of my life in a manner that honors the memory of Coach Hughes by exemplifying Christ. He will never be forgotten.”
