Patriots QB Drake Maye Says His 'Purpose Is Being a Believer'
Over the years, athletes sharing their faith have become more and more common. From Tim Tebow to Stephen Curry, bending a knee or saying a prayer in public isn’t unusual. For New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, however, his entire purpose, even apart from football, is wrapped up in who he believes Christ has called him to be.
Known as one of the NFL’s brightest young stars, Maye rose to popularity in 2024 when he was drafted as the number three overall choice out of the University of North Carolina. When asked what the 23-year-old thought about this popularity, Maye was quick to flip the script back on Christ.
“I think the biggest thing is using my platform to spread the Word and spread the Good News,” Maye told Relevant magazine. Defining purpose and passion, Maye furthered, “My passion is football, and my purpose is being a believer and strong in my faith.”
Refusing to be led by the world and instead grounded in truth, Maye continually connects with the Patriots’ Christian community through chapel services before the game as well as reading Scripture and getting to know other believers.
According to Movie Guide, Maye believes that “Knowing that [God’s Word is] bigger than football has been such a thing for me to lean on and take my thoughts away from football and know that this is my purpose and this is why I’m here on this stage today,” he told Sports Spectrum in the week leading up to the Super Bowl. “Being able to shine a light on others and get them to follow Jesus Christ is what I’m here for and what God put me here to do.”
With his priorities in order and His King on the throne, Maye believes anything aligned with the Lord’s Will is possible for his future and the future of the sport he loves.
