UK Prime Minister Steps Down from Position Less Than 2 Years after Election

As the head of government in a parliamentary system, a Prime Minister is meant to set policies, lead the cabinet, and help manage daily operations. In the United Kingdom, however, the overwhelming pressure became too much for Keir Starmer.
According to the CBN, Starmer was “forced out by intense pressure from within his own Labour Party. Under his leadership, much of Britain has been mired in economic stagnation, while social tensions have risen and riots have broken out over immigration. Antisemitism has also soared under Starmer's rule.”
For Starmer, resigning has been less about leaving a position and more about leading by example. "Every decision I've taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party," he said.
While Starmer will remain in his position until a new leader is chosen, he has been the most unpopular British Prime Minister in recent polling. As of last week, Andy Burnham won a special election and is the front-runner to replace Starmer.
Burnham will be the seventh Prime Minister elected in 10 years. His goal is to fight "against the forces of nationalism" that are calling for immigration reform in the UK. Gallup reports that immigration is the single most important issue facing the UK right now. Caused partly by a strain on public services and housing shortages, Burnham helps to make a lasting change.
The national executive committee will open nominations for a Prime Minister on July 9th. 2026.
