Woman Survives Violent Kidnapping after Speaking in Tongues

Kathi Byker was kidnapped from her home in the middle of the night. She was threatened and held for ransom, but she says God helped her escape.

Kathi and her husband David were asleep on Aug. 9, 2011 when two men with knives demanded money. One of the men taped Kathi’s wrists and ankles and pulled her into their SUV. Her mouth and eyes were also taped.

Kathi said she started praying and speaking in tongues despite her mouth being taped. She thought of Romans 8:26, which says, "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words."

"It's the perfect prayer because it is from my spirit to God's Spirit without the mind getting involved," she said.

She continued to pray and more scripture came to her mind, bringing her peace, Charisma News reports.

"The fear factor was lessening as the God factor was going up," Kathi said.

The SUV stopped and Kathi was dragged into a field and taped to a telephone pole.  Then the man left.

"It was a miracle," she said. "The duct tape that was holding me to the pole ripped as I just put a slight pressure on it.”

Kathi ran until she saw a nearby business. It was still dark, but there was a truck running in the parking lot. She woke the man who was sleeping in the truck.

"He had never been there before and I felt God had put him there to help me," Kathi said. "I told him, 'I think you're an angel,' and he laughed."

The three kidnappers were captured and are serving prison sentences.
