He Whispered to President Bush on 9/11—What Andy Card’s Historic Moment Can Teach Us 25 Years Later
It’s been known as "the whisper" that changed America. Recently, I had the privilege of sitting down with former White House Chief of Staff Andy Card in former President H.W. Bush’s apartment on the campus of Texas A&M. Card still remembers walking across the room on Sept. 11, 2001, to let then-President George W. Bush know that the country was under attack. As the nation reflects on that dark day, there are seven lessons that I learned from Mr. Card, whom I’ve had the privilege of interviewing twice in my life.
First: Pray Before You Go
Card was known for arriving early to work and for being the longest-serving chief of staff in American history. Card describes arriving early and walking the halls of the White House. I believe that’s why he was able to stay steady on the job.
Second: Be Calm
Card has always been known throughout his career as a calm man, which he attributes to his grandmother. Card described to me that his love for the country was due to his grandmother’s wisdom and words. As I look back on that day, Card was calm as he approached the president.
Third: Know the Mission
Card knew he had a mission: to tell the presidents the facts. “I wanted to make sure that I told the president that we were under attack and not allow for him to ask me questions.” Card explained to me that he didn’t know if there was a hot mic around.
Fourth: Don’t Forget the Audience
Although Card didn’t mention this to me directly, I believe that he knew this was particularly important in this case because the audience in front of the president at the time was young kids. During my time with Card last year, I noticed his gentle, kind spirit, which I believe comes from his wife, an ordained minister. Card and his wife were joined at the hip, and it was clear to me how much they loved one another.
Fifth: When Finished, Walk Away
Card explained to me that when he was done with the message he had to deliver to the president, he knew what his next assignment would be: to prepare for the president's departure.
Sixth: Pray
Prayer seems to be a common theme in the life of Card. When I asked him if he was praying as he was approaching or before he approached the president, his answer was straightforward, “Yes”
Seventh: Get Out of the Way
After Card had delivered the message, he didn’t hang around, and not until after George W. Bush's presidency did he even give an interview about his experience.
I’ll never forget my time with Andy Card. On this 9/11, I will be praying for him. I believe that because of how Card delivered the message, the president was able to lead the country on that horrific day.
May we never forget.
