Bible Sales Hit Record High in U.S. in 2025 as Americans Seek Hope in Uncertain Times

At a time when war, division, and cultural upheaval have left many wondering what comes next, Americans reached for Scripture in record numbers in 2025.
Bible sales in the United States hit new records in 2025, reflecting a growing hunger for hope in a world that often feels on the brink. Circana BookScan reports that 2025 “marked a 21-year high for Bible sales in the U.S.,” with 19 million units sold, according to Publishers Weekly. That number is an increase of 12 percent from 2024 and double the number sold in 2019 – just one year before the pandemic.
In the adult category, the top-selling Bible in the United States last year was The Invitation New Testament, released by B&H Publishing. Among children’s titles, The Action Bible: God’s Redemptive Story – a graphic-novel style edition illustrated by Sergio Cariello and published by David C Cook – led the way.
Bible sales hit a record in the United Kingdom, too, increasing 134 percent from 2008, the first year such sales were tracked, according to Christian publisher SPCK CEO Sam Richardson. The best seller in the U.K. was the ESV Bible (English Standard Version) published by Crossway.
“The greater interest in religious content in the U.S. reflects a bigger search for hope and community and suggests that consumers are increasingly turning to faith-based resources as anchors of stability and sources of comfort during uncertain times,” Brenna Connor, Circana director, told Publishers Weekly.
Sam Richardson, CEO of SPCK, posited that “worldwide political and social change, including the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, global wars, the rise of AI, and a growing mental health crisis” have led countless individuals around the world to examine “questions of meaning and spirituality.”
“The significant and sustained upward trend in Bible sales suggests that more and more people are investigating the Christian faith themselves and seeking to draw their own conclusions about its truth,” Richardson said.
Mark Schoenwald, CEO of HarperCollins Christian Publishing, told Publishers Weekly that midway through the fiscal year, the company is on pace for its third straight year of double-digit growth across “all formats, from kids’ Bibles to pew Bibles to complex study Bibles.”
“We just surpassed 10 million units of the NIV Study Bible,” he said. “What that tells me is people are not just buying Bibles, but they're actually trying to read them and understand them and then apply them to their lives.”
