Cory Asbury Proposes Alternative Super Bowl Halftime Show with Christian Artists
One of Christian music’s leading voices is proposing an alternative Super Bowl halftime show, featuring top Christian artists to give Americans a family-friendly option.
Reckless Love and The Father’s House singer Cory Asbury tossed out the idea to his followers on Instagram over the weekend and quickly drew the attention of other artists, including Forrest Frank.
“What if we did an alternative, family-friendly halftime show for the Super Bowl?” Asbury asked in a video. “Every year, everyone is all up in arms about the performer for the halftime show – and I get it because nine times out of 10, it's raunchy as heck. You're seeing stuff you don't want to see. You're hearing stuff you don't want to hear, especially for your kids.”
The headliner of the February Super Bowl halftime show is Bad Bunny, a Latin rapper noted for sexually suggestive and explicit lyrics.
“So what if we threw together an alternate show at a different venue with just the biggest Christian artist and glorified the name of Jesus on a gigantic scale, at a gigantic level? I've already talked to my boy Forrest [Frank]. He is down to clown – he's down to play music, is what I mean.”
The alternative event, Asbury clarified in a follow-up post, would be streamed live on an alternative platform during the actual Super Bowl halftime show, allowing families to switch to the Christian concert before switching back for the third quarter.
“Who else would you want to see there?” he asked fans. “My vision is this: Blow it up huge. Let's get a stadium. Let's go crazy. While people are glorifying money and fame and sex and all kinds of stuff that we don't want to see – we can lift up the name of Jesus. If you're down – [then] like this post, share it with your friends and suggest who you think should join for this show.”
Frank shared Asbury’s video on his own social media channel.
The two posts sparked positive feedback from individuals across the Christian entertainment genre, including Candace Cameron Bure, Tauren Wells, Josiah Queen, Phil Wickham, Riley Clemmons, Jordan Feliz, Natalie Layne, Leanna Crawford, Colton Dixon and Cochren and Co., among others.
“It’s time we take a stand!!” Asbury said. “Who’s in?!”
