Drew Brees Testifies of Faith in Christ During Hall of Fame Speech: 'Changed Me Forever'
The newest quarterback in the Pro Football Hall of Fame told a packed audience in Canton, Ohio, on Saturday, and countless others watching on television, that Christ transformed his life following a high school injury, giving him a peace and an identity he had never experienced.
Legendary New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees was enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame after a career that saw him lead the NFL over a 15-season span in passes completed and completion percentage while earning 13 Pro Bowl selections. He also led the league in passing yards seven times and, most memorably, guided the Saints to victory in Super Bowl XLIV, delivering New Orleans its first championship in franchise history.
Brees thanked his family, teammates and coaches and reflected on a major injury during his high school years that forced him to confront life’s purpose.
“One of the most life-changing events occurred my junior year of high school,” he said during his enshrinement speech. “After suffering a major injury, which put my athletic career in jeopardy, my identity was challenged. Up until that point, sports had defined me, and I wasn't sure who I was without it.
“Sitting in church on my 17th birthday, Christ came into my heart and changed me forever. I felt protected, connected and directed towards the path that God had for me. He would equip me for the journey, which led me to places I never could have expected. Thank you to Pastor Shawn Mitchell, Miles McPherson, Rob Wilton and Troy Martin for your Christian mentorship in my life.”
Brees played high school football in Texas before famously signing a scholarship with Purdue, where he led the Boilermakers to a Big Ten title his senior season.
“I don't take for granted that I got to play the most coveted position in all the sports,” he said. “From as far back as I can remember, I wanted to play quarterback. I never saw the position as one of pressure, but rather one of great responsibility. Bill Parcells described it as the steady hand that steers the ship. Marty Schottenheimer would say there is no position on the field whose performance has greater impact on those around him. Bill Walsh often emphasized that great quarterback play is about making the correct decisions repeatedly.
“The quarterback is the distributor of hope and confidence, a master of probability, the ultimate problem solver. I've always seen the game of football and the quarterback position as a true art form, like a song or a dance.”
Brees also used his speech to emphasize the importance of youth sports, urging coaches and parents not to get distracted from its true purpose.
“Youth sports and especially high school football should always be about character and leadership development, teamwork and positive affiliation. May we never forget that.”
Joining Brees in the 2026 class were Roger Craig, Larry Fitzgerald, Adam Vinatieri and Luke Kuechly.
