Franklin Graham Proclaims Christ to More than 70,000 in Argentina: ‘God Loves You’

In a stadium typically known for its enthusiastic soccer crowds, tens of thousands of Argentinians gathered over the weekend in the nation’s capital to hear Franklin Graham deliver a life-changing message of hope through Christ, some 34 years after his father, Billy Graham, did the same.
The event, Esperanza (Hope) Buenos Aires, drew nearly 75,000 to Velez Stadium over two nights and saw more than 8,400 make decisions for Christ, despite showers the first day and cool weather throughout the weekend. It included musical performances by Michael W. Smith, Charity Gayle, Redimi2, and Rescate.
“If you don’t remember anything else tonight, remember this – God loves you,” Graham told the crowd. “He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, from Heaven to this earth – not to condemn us but to save us.”
Velez Stadium housed matches during the 1978 World Cup but today is home to Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, a soccer team that competes in Argentina’s top league. On Friday, some 30,000 Argentinians braved the rain in Velez Stadium to hear Graham preach, with more than 42,000 packing the venue on Saturday.
“In the Bible, rain is a sign of blessing,” Graham said. “I believe we will see God’s blessing poured out here tonight.”
The evangelist told the crowd the story of the prodigal son from Luke 15 and explained how people often try to find meaning through materialism but always fall short.
“People are searching for purpose and meaning to their lives,” Graham said. “But something is missing. You have a vacuum inside that can only be filled by God. God has a plan for your life.”
He urged the audience to respond to God’s call.
“Are your sins forgiven? Are you sure?” Graham asked. “If you’re not sure, come right now. … God wants to put His arms around you tonight.”
In the coolness of the night, thousands walked forward, including one man named Federico. The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association recounted his story.
“The message of forgiveness touched my heart,” he said. “Many years ago, I fell into drugs, alcohol, and all kinds of sin, and today God is giving me the opportunity to change.”
Federico knows that the road ahead won’t be easy – but also trusts he has fellow Christians to walk with him.
“I felt a big hug – the hug I had been needing for a long time,” an emotional Federico said. “I lived away from God for a long time, and today I came back, like the prodigal son. I want to seek Him much more and have intimacy with Him. I want to be in communion with Him.”
