Jameis Winston Cites Philippians After Giants Win: 'I'm So Grateful for the Word of God'

The charismatic, often-quoted quarterback who began the season as the New York Giants’ backup moved to 2-0 this year as a starter Sunday, and then did what he often does in postgame interviews —pointed to his faith.
Jameis Winston completed 18 of 29 passes for three touchdowns as the Giants won a back-and-forth game, defeating Arizona 36-24 to improve to a division-leading 3-1 —despite losing starting quarterback Jaxson Dart to a season-ending injury in the second game of the season.
Winston has struggled at times —he threw two interceptions Sunday —but has done enough the past two games to keep the Giants winning.
He doesn’t even know if he’ll be starting next week, with the Giants acquiring another quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, from Minnesota in a trade. For now, though, Winston is enjoying his role.
“Praise God,” Winston told CBS in a postgame interview.
“It was only by the grace of God,” he added.
He said he leaned on Scripture to help him move past his interceptions and focus on the next play.
“I'm so grateful for the Word of God,” Winston told CBS. “One thing I do is forgetting that is behind me, and reaching forward to what is ahead. You think that I'm joking — but Philippians 3:13 states this, and you have to do it, no matter the circumstances, conditions or facts.”
Winston was paraphrasing the words of the Apostle Paul: “One thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead.”
Winston then pointed to God’s grace.
“Desire what you would love, and I wanted this team to win a game, and it looked like the odds was against us. It really did, but God found a way. How great is He? His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. His ways are better than our ways. Oh my goodness, that's only His grace.”
The Giants’ first-year coach —Jim Harbaugh — is also a man of faith, Winston noted. Harbaugh led Baltimore for 18 seasons before being fired following a season in which the Ravens missed the playoffs.
“Our head coach is tenacious. Our head coach is a Kingdom man,” Winston said. “Our head coach is instilling every one of these qualities in us — and it's really a beautiful thing to see.”
Meanwhile, Winston said he isn’t worried about what the arrival of another quarterback could mean for his starting role.
“I'm just grateful for the opportunity I have now —and right now, I get to smile and say I'm the starting quarterback for the New York football Giants. So focusing on what I love is winning games with my team, being the best that I can be, and I just feel like that I'm heating up and I'm starting to get better, better and better.”
