John Harbaugh Points to Jesus after First Giants Win: ‘Our Lord and Savior’
John Harbaugh may be coaching a new team, but that has not stopped him from publicly sharing about his faith in Christ.
The New York Giants’ new head coach led his team to an impressive 28-20 win Monday night over the favored Dallas Cowboys, giving him a memorable first victory after being released in the offseason following an 18-year run with Baltimore.
The Giants led 14-7 at halftime and built a 28-14 lead in the fourth.
“I'm really proud of our players and everybody in the organization,” Harbaugh told a room full of reporters after the game before turning the conversation to faith, saying, “We talk to our guys about being humble and about giving credit where credit is due.
“Faith is a big component of what we do, however guys define that —and for me, it's our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and our faith in our Creator.”
It was important, Harbaugh said, to ensure his “heart's in the right place” at the beginning of his news conference.
That same spirit of selflessness, he said, was reflected in his team’s performance.
“I think that kind of epitomizes a little bit about the way the guys played,” he said. “It was a team effort.”
Harbaugh won a Super Bowl with Baltimore and ended his Ravens career with a 13-11 playoff record. He has often been open about his Christian faith.
He gave fans a peek into his beliefs during a 2023 interview with the Sports Spectrum Podcast, noting that the apostles were willing to die for their faith.
“Nobody at any point in time recanted when it happened — even to martyring themselves and being executed in the most gruesome ways,” he said. “They all held firm to saying that this Man was crucified and rose from the dead, and they saw it. That is strong evidence to me. ... I don't think you can ignore that.
“You've got to look into it,” he said. “You’ve got to study it.”
He told Sports Spectrum he trusts God’s sovereignty for his life.
“Before the beginning of time, He had a plan for us, and He created us in a way [that] He knows us intimately,” Harbaugh said. “He knows what our true desires are, what our purpose is. So trying to find that purpose or connection with God and being connected and filled with the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit — that is success. That is the ultimate success.”
