Lainey Wilson Shares the Christian Book Helping Her Follow God's Will: It's 'Biblical'

Country singer Lainey Wilson says a book by Christian author Susie Larson has helped deepen her walk with Christ – and taught her to make decisions that better align with God’s will.
The Grammy winner and four-time CMA Female Vocalist of the Year jokes in a new Instagram post that she’s never considered herself a reader – but says she enjoyed a book by Larson so much that she devoted an entire video to reviewing it. The book is "Your Sacred Yes: Trading Life-Draining Obligation for Freedom, Passion, and Joy."
“I told y'all I never thought that would happen, but I'm really enjoying it,” she said of her new passion.
Wilson described Larson as “somebody that I love listening to”– and said her book is changing her perspective on when to say yes – and when to say no – to the opportunities that come her way.
Wilson highlighted several lessons from the book, including what Larson calls the “sloppy ‘yes,’” which Wilson said is “just saying yes impulsively.”
“And I think it is important to stop and pray, talk to God about it – every little detail of our life, instead of just saying, ‘Yes, I'm doing it.’ I mean, the truth is, like things will come to me, and I'm just like: ‘Heck yeah, let's do it, let's do it.’ And I'm not going to God about whether or not I actually should be doing that.”
Another lesson involves what Larson calls the “shackled ‘yes,’” Wilson said.
“That is saying yes out of fear instead of saying yes out of faith. That comes from people-pleasing and guilt, and I am guilty of that,” Wilson said. “I am a people-pleaser.”
The “sacred ‘yes,’” Wilson said, is different: It comes only after seeking God’s direction.
“That means saying ‘yes’ because you have talked to God and you believe that He is leading you to that,” she said. “... I think that healthy boundaries are important, and they're actually biblical. So, saying ‘no’ to the wrong things—it's not selfish. It is just protecting you to be able to say ‘yes’ to what God has actually called you to. And so, I love this book. If you struggle with that, maybe check it out, too. But I think that God's pace – it is different than the world's pace, than my pace."
“And I think that Susie Larson does a really great job at encouraging the people reading the book to just try to resist constant busyness and instead just try to live from a place of peace and trust in that fruitfulness. Fruitfulness – I mean, it just comes from living with God rather than just trying to strive to be somewhere.”
Wilson recalled a conversation she had with Dolly Parton.
“And my question for her was: ‘How do you know what to say ‘yes’ to? And she was like: It has to be a big ‘yes.’ It has to be something that is very exciting for me.
“Which just reminds me of this book.”
Wilson wrote on Instagram: “I’m learning that not every opportunity is meant to be a yes. Sometimes saying no is what makes room for the things God is actually calling you to.”
In June, Wilson made a surprise appearance alongside Christian singer Brandon Lake at his Cowboy Church worship event during CMA Fest in Nashville, joining him onstage to perform their duet "The Jesus I Know Now."
