New England quarterback Drake Maye didn’t hesitate Monday when asked to name his favorite Bible verse, pointing to a passage that affirms God’s sovereignty and His protection of His people.
Maye appeared on WEEI’s Rich and Ken with Ted Johnson show one day after completing 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards and two touchdowns in the Patriots’ 24-19 win over Miami — a victory that improved New England to 5-3 and kept Maye’s team firmly in the division title hunt.
Maye made the comments toward the end of the show after a caller from Rhode Island asked him to name his favorite verse and to explain his reasoning.
“Here we go — Proverbs 16:9,” Maye quickly replied.
“‘The heart of a man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps,’” he said, citing the verse.
Maye then explained why the verse resonates with him, saying it reminds him to trust God’s plan—not his own.
“I think it's just so much in life -- we're kind of trying to plan and trying to see things and pray for things and trying to see things in our life to happen,” he said. “And really, it's the Lord doing the work and just trusting in Him and trusting in His plan.”
Maye’s answer impacted host Rich Shertenlieb.
“I'm a lifelong Catholic. I don't think I've ever heard that one. That is a good one. I like that,” Shertenlieb said. “Which one was it again?”
“Proverbs 16:9,” Maye replied.
“I’ll have to write that one down. That is a very, very good one,” Shertenlieb said.
Maye was drafted in 2024 out of the University of North Carolina and is in his third year in the league, having led New England to the AFC title last season and a Super Bowl appearance. It wasn’t the first time he’s been open about his faith. Last February he told a gathering of reporters that faith is “constant in my life.”
“One of the best things about the football team is that there's other brothers on the team that are followers of Christ,” Maye said, adding that he can “share thoughts” with teammates about faith in and out of chapel -- moments he described as “powerful.”
“The night before a game, we’re in here spreading the Word, and listening to the Word and knowing that that's bigger than football — it's just been such a thing for me to lean on and then take my thoughts away from football and know that this is my purpose, and this is why I'm here on this stage today, and be able to shine light on others and get them to follow Jesus Christ is what I'm here for,” Maye said in February. “And it's what God put me here to do.”
He’s also drawn attention for marrying young and encouraging his teammates to consider marriage. He married his childhood sweetheart, Ann Michael, in 2025 at age 22.
“My teammates, they have the right to whatever they choose, but I definitely would advise them to eventually get married,” he said in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. “It's one of the best things in life, one of the best things I've experienced in my life. And there's no better feeling than coming home to a wife that loves you and cares for you and is just worried about your best interest.
“... I chose to get married young, and I don't regret it one bit.”
