Ravens Players Model Jesus’ Servant Leadership by Washing Schoolchildren’s Feet

NFL stars Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry joined other Baltimore Ravens players Monday in modeling Jesus’ servant leadership by washing the feet of local schoolchildren during an event that also provided the students with new shoes.

Jackson and Henry joined Zay Flowers and other Ravens players at Severn Elementary School, where the students learned about personal finance in an event sponsored by M&T Bank and EVERFI while also receiving new shoes and witnessing an act of servant leadership, according to Ravens Wire.

“Ravens players served students today by washing their feet and providing them with new shoes,” the Ravens said in a post on the team’s Instagram page. “These acts of service, led by our team chaplain, represent the importance of humility and serving others.”

Jackson and Henry are the team’s starting quarterback and running back, respectively, while Flowers starts at wide receiver.

The New Testament recounts a powerful story of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet on the night before His crucifixion, during the Last Supper, as an example of humble, servant leadership. According to John 13, Jesus “poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.”

Faith has been a visible part of the NFL this year.

For example, several NFL players who participated in the league’s My Cause My Cleats campaign this fall chose to highlight Christian organizations.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy selected Samaritan’s Purse, a Christian humanitarian group known for disaster relief and international aid. Kansas City placekicker Harrison Butker chose the Herzog Foundation, which works to expand Christ-centered K–12 education nationwide. New York Giants linebacker Swayze Bozeman and Chicago Bears quarterback Case Keenum selected Fellowship of Christian Athletes, while New England running back TreVeyon Henderson chose Global Christian Relief, an organization that supports persecuted Christians worldwide.
