'Rings of Power' Season 3 Trailer Unveiled: Sauron Begins Forging the One Ring
Prime Video has unveiled the official trailer for Season 3 of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power," offering a first look at a darker chapter in the streaming saga and even giving a glimpse at the event every Middle-earth fan knows is coming: the forging of the One Ring.
Prime Video released the trailer on Friday at San Diego Comic-Con, spotlighting Sauron’s quest to forge the One Ring and seize control of all Middle-earth.
Scheduled for five seasons, "The Rings of Power" serves as a prequel to "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" and is based primarily on the appendices to J.R.R. Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings" novels.
“The Dark Lord is on the brink of crafting a new power,” viewers hear during the trailer, as it describes the creation of “One Ring to rule them all.”
Viewers also see the ring.
The first four episodes of Season 3 will debut Nov. 11, with two more episodes releasing Nov. 18 before the final two episodes stream Nov. 25.
Middle-earth is at war in Season 3.
“Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion,” Prime Video said in a plot description. “Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path. Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings.”
Deep in the land of Mordor, the description said, Sauron is working “day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring.”
“Now, all the free peoples of Middle-earth – Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards alike – must find a way to come together, in a race against time to prevent Sauron from achieving his goal of utter domination of all life.”
The series is rated TV-14.
Executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay are the showrunners.
McKay told Crosswalk Headlines that the series’ themes are grounded in Tolkien’s Christian faith.
“There's a great quote that we discovered where Tolkien talked about [how] he's always interested in writing something that is universal and timeless. He doesn't want it to be a one-to-one allegory,” McKay told Crosswalk Headlines. “And he talked about how when he was writing the book, it was a Catholic work, unconsciously, because of his own faith – but then in revisions, consciously.”
“And I think the way that we see that in the books,” McKay added, “and the way that we hopefully have translated over to the series, is that the themes are profoundly faith-based.”
